i did some searches and didnt find anything, but if i missed a thread about this, then sorry xD.

now, for my issue.

We have several Dell optiplex 280 computers that we are trying to get up and running for use.  The issue is that we cant even log into them.

During the post and up till windows loads the keyboards work.  Once windows loads and it brings up the login screen the keyboards stop working.

The mouse still works however (just in case).

I have tried about 4 different keyboards and 3 different models (they are all from dell).

all 6 computers are displaying this behavior.

In the bios, but it looks like all the settings are correct (still on defaults).

I have contacted Dell about the issue but they have given me bupkis in terms of help.

We have reimaged these computers several times but they still have this issue.

I tested the keyboards on newer and older models of computers (110, 150, 270, 520, 620, and 740, and 745 Optiplex models) and these boards work on all of those but not the 280's.

I would have tried a ps/2 but there are no ports for those on these computers.

 :help:

I  am not a hardware person.

Have you tried safe mode, tapping F8 during start up? Then selecting last known good configuration?

How did you come by 6 PC's ?

have mode displays the same issue as with loading windows normally, the keyboards dont function and we are unable to login to the computer.

and LKGC hasnt helped either.

well, these are 6 out of 10 that we pulled from our storage warehouse.

4 of them are working perfectly, but these other 6 have this issue.

We were going to pull down 6 more and try them as well, but we finally got a response from dell (a crappy one, but one none the less) and they are shipping out new motherboards xD.

Sounds like windows is loading the wrong usb drivers, that's why the key board works before they get loaded, have you rebooted with the key board disconnected then connect the keyboard, probably not a solution but something you could try, others have had the same problem with dell & usb I could not find a real solution.

Are they all on the same BIOS version?  Are there any BIOS updates available?

@zep516

we have tried that, still the same issue.  We could remote into the computer, but we dont know its network name XD, if we could we could at least check to see if the drivers are shot.

@Aaron

Yeah, they are all the same.

right now they are using A03 (which i think was the highest for that model).  I might mention to my co-worker to try that tomorrow.

i dont have much faith in dell computers, so im not really expecting much to come of replacing the motherboard anyway lol.

Ill try and dig up a ps/2 adapter from one of our storage rooms and see if that works as well.

if not, then the bios update will be the most likely thing to try next.

alright, we found the issue.

We had to remote into the computer after we found its network name, butt he issue was that somehow all the usb drivers on those 6 computers got deleted (these were working computers before we retired them a few months ago, they havent been used since).

so the motherboards were mostly useless xD.

after getting it to login, windows automatically replaced the drivers on the computer we tested it on and its working now.  WEre probably jusst going to push an image of that computer down to the other 5 to fix the issue with them.

thanks for the help though!
