A towwer i need info on
« on: October 16, 2017, 02:18:30 PM »
Hi all,
This tower was given to me: Antec tower w/MSI X48C Platinum motherboard.
NVIDIA GeForce MX AGP MX-400-32MG.
It has copper plumbing but i dont know anything about it and it does run Linux but heats up with W10.
Any help is appreciated.

Antec is your case. I don't know the exact model case.

http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=704923&fid=4&lan=us

The motherboard is MSI of course here:

motherboard manual is here:

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/X48C_Platinum#down-manual

Your video card is Nvidia.

It's most likely built for a gaming system. The system bios is probably overclocking everything. This creates more heat. It is an older system. I would check your bios settings and set it to default to start. Enter del to enter setup on post.

but heats up with W10.
Without actually stating the temperatures, this does not tell us anything. Does it overheat? What are the actual temps?

Whew so much info. When i turn it on i will set the Bios to Default for sure. Might just solve the heating problem described to me by the guy who gave it to me.

You can find the the at rest CPU, system temperatures and fan speed in the Bios as well. It is located under the H/W feature. The fan speeds can be adjusted here as well.

Knowing how high the temperature is running would help as Digerati has said.

Not knowing the history of the system, I would open the case and check that it isn't clogged up with dirt and dust in the fan systems, cooling fins and power supply fan. Canned air could come in handy. Do this check before even hooking it up or turning it on.

If it actually running hot, cpu temperature then the thermal grease could have lost it's cooling efficiency. If you decide to go there and removing the cooling fan, be careful in trying to separate the the fan from the CPU, it can be like it is soldered if it has been hot.

At the moment ill leave all as is except i did change the Bios to "Failsafe Default". Rebooted and ran both linux and Windows systems for 4 hours and no over heating in fact it was very cool so if it was overclocked thats taken care of.
I did blow it out with my compressor (i was careful) and all was clean except the power supply had quite abit of dust clumps that blew into the interior of the case which i had to blow out all over again;-).
Tonight i have the time to install a new Linux system and then ill know if it runs hot or not although 4 hours of running last night should have heated it up if it was going to.
It had W7 on it and it was an illegal copy so thats the hd im going to format and load linux on.
Ill check temps and fan speeds this weekend to see what im dealing with but if a problem comes up i might be in Bios sooner.
Looks like a 900 Antec tower but has much more plumbing than ive seen in pics of the MSI original MB.
Thanks for all the links and all the help/info you all supplied. Its been very helpful for this noob;-)
I am abit suprised at all the memory sticks it has. i havent pulled any to check but i will this weekend. Its supposed to take Turbo memory only and it looks like there is other sticks in there but it does run very nicely even though its probably been through hell;-).
If any problems come up ill be back to get advice from the pro's.
Thanks to all,
Ghost
