You can remove the GoogleUpdate scheduled tasks.  However, if you reinstall Chrome, the tasks will be re-added.  See How to modify scheduled tasks in Windows XP for instructions.

Thanks so much for your help, Corrine. :)  I really appreciate being to come here and work through the questions and problems that I can't sort out on my own.

I have the google updater reconfigured to only check once a day, so I think I might just leave it so I don't have to do that again when I reinstall Chrome.   I'll probably wait to do that until  the next time I need to test something.
