Windows Update failed - 0x8e5e0158

For the past two months I've received errors when trying to update Windows 10.

Last month I got this:
2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x86-based Systems (KB4574727)
Last failed install attempt on ‎09/‎20/‎2020 - 0x8e5e0158

And this month it was:
2020-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x86-based Systems (KB4577671)
Last failed install attempt on ‎10/‎26/‎2020 - 0x8e5e0158

All other updates (Flash, .NET, Malicious Software Removal, etc.) successfully installed
I tried downloading the file from the Windows update catalog and installing it offline. I get the same error.
I tried with my AV shields both on and off. It makes no difference.
I tried with the firewall both on and off. It makes no difference.
I've searched the Net for "0x8e5e0158" and didn't see anything useful.

Can anyone tell me what error code 0x8e5e0158 means and how to fix it?

AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250 Processor

I had no luck finding anything useful for that error message either.  Have you tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter?  Select Start  > Settings  > Update & Security  > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshoters > Windows Update.

If you don't see the "Apply this fix" option after running the troubleshooter it doesn't mean that it didn't work. The tool runs an automated script to fix common problems.  If something else is found, you'll see the "Apply this fix" option to apply the fix.

Restart the computer when you're done.

I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter. It said it found and fixed some errors but I was still unable to install KB4577671. I got the same error message

Then just for grins I ran the BITS service troubleshooter. It said it found nothing.

Then I opened a CMD prompt window (as admin) and ran the System File Checker. It said it found some corrupt files and fixed them.

I then tried installing KB4577671 again. SUCCESS! It installed with no errors.

If this happens again I think I'll try running the System File Checker first

Good work!  That required some independent thinking on your part.  Just for info, it is recommended to run DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) first before running SFC on Windows 10, 8.1 or 8.  See Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

I can't take the credit. My search for information about the Troublshooter you mentioned lead me to a site that talked about problems with Windows Update. Not my problem specifically, but problems in general.

It talked about the Toubleshooters and also had instructions for using SFC, which included running DISM as one of the steps.

Other things it mentioned that I didn't do were:
1. Stopping, resetting and restarting Windows Update
2. Clearing and resetting some cache whose exact name escapes me now
