No, Paddy, I don't believe it is related to the driver updates.  Here's one public example of others having the same issue:  https://twitter.com/barbbowman/status/1090605972974911494

As I’ve said so many times before, updating a Windows device these days is quite a crazy roller coaster ride, as something could go wrong pretty much at any point.

If you’ve been following Microsoft news closely, you probably know already that the company has shipped several botched updates lately, especially on Windows 10.

On this particular version, the icing of the cake has been without a doubt the October 2018 Update, which deleted user files stored in libraries without them even being notified.

But returning to the experience with Windows Update, some Windows users are finding out the hard way that updating a device doesn’t always go exactly as planned.

Others have tried using Google DNS as well as other DNS services to no avail.  In the Tweet I linked above, the blog post by Günter Born points to an issue with Windows Defender.  See Windows Defender with Update issues (01/30/2019)? (https://borncity.com/win/2019/01/30/windows-defender-with-update-issues-01-30-2019/).

Relax and don't try to update until it is sorted out.

Günter Born summarizes the issues in his blog post at Windows Update Service globally disturbed? (01/31/2019)  (https://borncity.com/win/2019/01/31/windows-update-service-globally-disturbed-01-31-2019/).  Included are copies of Twitter comments by others as well as links to other articles on the issue.  However, the issue appears to be Error 0x80072EFD which stands for ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT, the server connection could not be established.

@Paddy, apparently the issue has been tracked to various ISPs' domain name system (DNS) settings.  I've seen in various venues that U.S. users are now able to update but according to the article at ZDNet (https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-updates-are-broken-again-but-this-time-its-not-microsofts-fault/), it hadn't been resolved in the U.K. this morning:

A BT forum moderator, Neil, acknowledged the complaints on Thursday evening UK time and said the ISP's network team has been informed of the issue. The company has yet to report a resolution.

Affected BT customers were still experiencing the same Windows Update problems on Friday morning.

Holding off on the update as well.  I'm so glad we have that option and can wait until MS gets its collective stuff together.

Here's the "official explanation from Windows 10 update history (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464619/windows-10-update-history):

“The Windows Update service was impacted by a data corruption issue in an external DNS service provider global outage on January 29, 2019. The issue was resolved on the same day and Windows Update is now operating normally, but a few customers have continued to report issues connecting to the Windows Update service. We expect these issues will go away as downstream DNS servers are updated with the corrected Windows Update DNS entries.”
