Did you know about μTorrent?
« on: April 19, 2020, 11:00:21 AM »
I was wondering why μTorrent has that μ at the beginning of its name. μ is the small Greek letter for the letter m. M is the capital letter in Greek too.

Although we often use this P2P program as uTorrent, I found that the correct name is μTorrent. The u is inserted to more easily write the μ, but it's not the same. Actually, there is no u letter in Greek. μ is for the word micro/μικρό, referring to the program's small memory footprint: the program was designed to use minimal computer resources while offering functionality comparable to larger BitTorrent clients such as Vuze or BitComet. (From Wikipedia).

I noticed that they recommend to pronounce it as mu or moo, but it's wrong. It's mi actually, like the musical note MI, or when you say Me.

Cool. I've always read it "u" torrent but my brain would "see" it as the micro sign.

I always figured it was just another misuse of a term or word by marketing weenies.

I know µ means micro. I think I've understood that since high school calc or physics (I graduated in 1970 so, for a long time).

But I have always pronounced µTorrent as "you-torrent" though I don't know why. I can only assume I first heard, or rather read about it and the author of the article did not know how to insert the ASC-II character; µ from his keyboard. So he put uTorrent instead. I note Wikipedia has it both ways too.

So, to address your wondering question, I think µTorrent has the µ in the name simply because the folks at BitTorrent - the company name for the developers who created µTorrent - wanted to call it that.

Actually, I am not wondering now. I posted this just for "educational reasons".  :)

μ is for micro/μικρό, and yes, the developers chose the Greek letter for m instead of the English one, just because they wanted to do that. Just like the mathematical symbol π (3.14), which is the Greek letter for p.

Also, the u is used because it's easier to type u instead of μ, when you write in English. Although now we found both, the correct, meaning the one which gives the meaning, is μ.
