Microsoft Edge Enhancements for IE Mode
« on: April 05, 2022, 06:55:31 PM »
With the retirement of the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application set for June 15, 2022, Microsoft Edge continues to make enhancements for IE Mode. The latest enhancements include restoration of IE COM objects to original functionality and bidirectional sharing of cookies between IE Mode and Microsoft Edge.

With IE 11's retirement just over two months away, if you haven't enabled IE Mode on your Windows 10 device (or Windows 11) now is the time to do so. Follow the simple steps below from Microsoft Support:

1. In the address bar for Microsoft Edge, type edge://settings/defaultbrowser and then click Enter.
2. Slide the Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer toggle to Allow*.
3. Restart Microsoft Edge.

Internet Explorer mode is now enabled. To view a website using Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge, use the following steps.

1. Navigate to the website you want to view in Internet Explorer mode.
2. Click the three dots in the upper right corner of the browser window.
3. Select Reload in Internet Explorer Mode.

To return to browsing without Internet Explorer mode, either click Leave on the information bar at the top of the screen or close the current tab and open a new tab in Microsoft Edge.

*Note: Since the instructions were written on the Microsoft Support website, Microsoft Edge has been updated.  Thus, contrary to what is shown there as "ON", the correction option is to toggle the switch to "Allow".

This is a bit interesting.

PenFed (Pentagon Federal Credit Union) (https://www.penfed.org/) refuses to accept IE - even with Edge in IE Mode. Not sure if that is what I expect or not. Maybe that's what I find interesting. ???

IE was never my default browser and, as far as I recall, I never used it on Windows 10.  I've found that the extensions I've installed for Microsoft Edge have worked very well and it has replaced Pale Moon as my default browser.

WARNING!!!!  I tried this out - setting that option to Allow.

I was not impressed so I set it back to Default. But now, this morning, nearly every site I hit takes a few seconds longer than normal to load, then it comes up in IE Mode! :( Double-checking the settings, it is indeed back to the Default but not working properly. Will try again - but it seem clear, at least for my machine, that this option has problems.

I don't recommend it.

That is very strange.  I have it set to Allow.  Under the top option, "Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge", do you also have it set for "Incompatible sites only"?  That is the setting I have and IE Mode has never occurred.

Well, I am afraid I was too hasty to investigate thoroughly. I ran the following command from an elevated cmd prompt:

taskkill.exe /F /T /IM MsEdge.exe

Then I started Edge and reset Edge to the defaults of "Incompatible sites only" and "Default", and restarted Edge again.

Now everything "seems" to be working as before and as expected.
