Microsoft Edge to Stop ePub Format
« on: August 27, 2019, 02:44:50 PM »
From Microsoft Edge to stop ePub format reading support:
Quote
Microsoft has shared that the Edge browser will no longer support e-books which use .epub file extension. Reading eBooks had been one of the strongest features of Edge, but this one particular extension is bring dropped. It is most widely supported vendor-independent XML-based e-book format; that is, it is supported by the almost all hardware readers. The support page has been updated recently, i.e., 20 August 2019.

Updated Microsoft Edge Support page:  Download an ePub app to keep reading in Microsoft Edge

I liked the ease of using Microsoft Edge to read ePub books and am disappointed with the change.  In looking over the current options available in the Microsoft Store, I wasn't impressed.  Bookviser eBook Reader and Sumatra, suggested in Best PDF and eBook Reader Apps for Windows 10 may be the best free current options available.  I used Sumatra for a long time before Microsoft Edge added the capability to read PDFs.

My opinion for these I tried:

Edge: I tried it for a while, but I don't know why something made me to search about something else. Perhaps I had the feeling that Microsoft would stop supporting the epub format.   ;)

Sumatra: As Corrine, I used it a lot. But I will not stay with it, because of the dictionary feature in the other ebooks readers. I often read books in English, but because English is not my native language, I need sometimes to translate a word. I can't do this in Sumatra as I can do in other readers.

Kindle: I have the Kindle for pc application, and I read my kindle ebooks. It can also read books in pdf, but not epub, at least without a further action. I like it.

Bookviser eBook Reader: It's good. But: the application does not take the whole monitor space. I mean, the surface of the book's pages is smaller than what I want. Also, I can't find the dictionary feature.

Calibre: It's an open source reader and has many features, even converting different ebooks formats. So, it can convert the epub books to MOBI. This gives you the opportunity to open the epub books to kindle. It can also open the Kindle books. I like it.

In the light of above, I prefer Kindle and Calibre, and probably I will keep both. If finally I stay with Kindle, I need the Calibre for converting the epub books to MOBI.

I don't think Pete! will mind my quoting part of his post about EPUBReader from SNF.  When I checked the link, I noticed that it is available in multiple languages, including Greek so, of course, thought that might be of interest to you, Panos.

It sounds good.

Not for Pale moon though.

An advantage (for me) of ebooks readers is that you also can organize your books in them. This can not be done in a browser. I guess it is a matter of what anyone is used to do.

After being deprived of using Edge as an epub reader, and actually being forced into trying to use some of the alternatives, I'll agree with DR M on Calibre. I just made the Calibre E-Book Viewer my epub default.

Since Calibre seems to take a relatively long time to load, I'll keep the Firefox EPUBReader extension for shorter works that can be finished quickly.
