MyPal Browser for ** XP ** (and beyond)
« on: September 21, 2019, 11:22:01 AM »
First off, let me stress that I do ***NOT*** advocate anyone going "back" to XP at this time... official support ended several years ago.

With that being said, for anyone who still maintains an XP system:   I just "discovered" a browser which runs on XP, and is still supported (to the extent possible, given any limitations forced upon it by the XP operating system).   It's called MyPal, and it's based on PaleMoon.

Mypal is a current and maintained Windows XP web browser. Mypal is based on Moonchild Productions' Pale Moon code, which itself was forked from Mozilla's FireFox code several years ago, but is also maintained and kept current. The goal of Mypal is to provide a current, secure, and reliable web browser for Windows XP.   Mypal operates identically to Pale Moon with some minor exceptions.

https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal/releases

They offer both a 32-bit as well as 64-bit version.   The current version is 28.7.1.

I've only been testing/using it for a day so far, but it appears to be a welcome addition to XP, given that IE, FF, and PM are no longer supported there.

Thanks. Good to know for those who still run XP. I also don't advocate going on the internet with XP but not everyone pulls old computers off the internet.

I am currently imaging the Win 7 side of my dual boot desktop. The other partition is XP which I rarely boot up.  Today might be a good time to download and have a look at this browser.

SeaMonkey also still works on Windows XP and it is still being kept alive, at least for the time being.  Version 2.49.5 was just released this month.

For those who are unfamiliar with SeaMonkey, it is probably the last true (that is, similar) remaining descendant of the old Netscape Navigator browser.

Some of the linux distros I use, have SeaMonkey as the browser. I haven't looked at it in Windows because it has more than just a browser. But it is good to know there are other options.

I'm helping someone on another forum with Maxon v 5 (not the latest beta version) in XP. He has sound issues only in the browser. I might point him to these two browsers to see if one of them may fix his sound issues.

I tested MyPal 28.7.1 in XP this morning. I like it. I was able to add uBO updater and the last version of uBO for legacy Firefox. If you know Palemoon, it is exactly like that but altered to work on XP.
I also tried Seamonkey 2.49.5. I didn't like that. It installed 3 extensions I didn't want Chatzilla, DOM inspector and Lightening. I disabled all three. I had to close the browser and reopen for those changes to occur.  When I went searching for Privacy and Security extensions, the browser froze and I had to end the process with Task Manager. On my 2nd attempt, to look at Privacy and Security extensions, it did not freeze. The deal breaker, at least for me, is that uBO no longer is supported in Seamonkey.

If you insist on going on the internet in XP, these are two current browsers to try.

Note: I installed both browsers as portable. I keep folders on my XP desktop with all the installation files in there. When I'm done with a browser, I simply erase the entire folder.

For Add-ons in MyPal, I'm currently using uBlock Origin 1.16.4.11 (and uBlock Origin Updater 1.6.6), HTTP Always 5.2.24, and NoSquint 2.2.2

I'm very happy I've found this... it feels "crisp" on my XP system, in contrast to other browsers which felt like they were "dragging" (as well as no longer being supported).

The browser extensions

uBlock Origin Updater has been updated to version 1.6.8 (12/17), and

uBlock Origin has been updated to [Firefox LEGACY] 1.16.4.12 (12/16)

for both MyPal  and PaleMoon browsers.

[If you MANUALLY update your extensions, you will have to do so TWICE:  the first time, to find the uBlock UPDATER, and the second time to find uBlock itself.]

----

Note:  uBlock Origin for Firefox is at version 1.24.2

I don't know about MyPal but uBO updater is now at 1.6.9 and uBO is at 1.16.4.15 in Palemoon.

uBlock Updater shows as 1.6.9 on Pale Moon for me, last updated January 18, 2020.

MyPal also has uBlock updater 1.6.9, and uBlock origin 1.16.4.15.

[I was focusing primarily on the MyPal program updates here, rather than the add-ons.]

MyPal basically follows PaleMoon, albeit with the program updates taking time for the author to make (XP and other) adjustments to PaleMoon's most-recent coding.

I am using MyPal regularly, in particular on XP, but also sometimes on Win10... and I'm very happy with it.

I might try MyPal on my Windows 7 desktop. Palemoon only updates uBlockOrigin. I have https everywhere disabled because it doesn't get updated. I do use NoSquint but your version is newer than mine because it too never gets updated.
I like NoSquint because I have different levels of magnification set for different sites and it remembers those settings so I don't have to keep using ctrl and the + or - to keep changing.

I can vouch for MyPal on Windows 7 but I do not use Ublock Origin with it.  I can't remember my reasoning with the issue but for MyPal and PaleMoon on both Windows 7 and 10 I decided to go with PaleMoon's Adblock Latitude (and also Privacy Badger).  For all of my other browsers I do use Ublock Origin.  There was some reason. . . .  (Sigh)

MyPal has been updated to version 28.13.0 ; however, the internal updater does NOT seem to be finding this update.   You may manually download/install it from https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal/releases

My current add-ons are:
uBlock Origin 1.16.4.25
HTTPS Always 5.2.25
NoSquint 2.2.2

=================

The cited download page for MyPal 28.13.0 contains the following "announcement":

PAY Attention original palemoon developers declared that we abuse their sites they even tried block them from mypal but failed, and it will be likely an excuse when they begin abuse us. So no excuse ещ to me i removed all links to their sites from mypal, the addons page synch and other stuff regarding palemoon will not work, do not complain and create issue about this. You can open their sites manually but i do not suggest who knows what they invent next time. If you really want to open their site use another browser. Anyway i can build new versions while they stay opensource and eventually we set up our own alternative sites.

--------------------

WOW!   Looks like there's bad blood between MyPal and PaleMoon.   Searching, I located the following post at the PaleMoon forum:
https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=25084&hilit=mypal&start=20#p198040

(That thread continues on for another two pages).

I'm really not sure what to make of all this  :(

----------------------------

The attacks, on both sides, aren't the easiest matters to follow.   What I think the objection is, is that MyPal users typically download their add-ons from the PaleMoon add-ons server, "hogging" bandwidth there... PaleMoon wants them to have their own, independent server   [I doubt there are that many MyPal users, so what I just stated may not be the actual reason.]

---------

I had been under the impression that MyPal was an authorized/sanctioned "fork" of PaleMoon.   If it [ever] was, that's clearly no longer the case.   So I'm debating whether I should continue to mention MyPal updates here... unless/until the matter is amicably resolved.

The developer of Palemoon is not the easiest person to get along with.
Please, continue to mention it because people who still surf with XP will at least have a patched browser. It is perhaps the only one that works. (I don't surf on the XP computers so I don't follow too well what browsers work.)
