Title: News and Interests on the Windows Taskbar
Post by: Corrine on May 20, 2021, 01:56:13 PM
With the release of the Windows 10 May 2021 update, those who didn't already have it will see the new "News and Interests" ion their taskbar.  For information about the available settings, see this Microsoft Support article:  Stay up to date with news and interests (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/stay-up-to-date-with-news-and-interests-a39baa08-7488-4169-9ed8-577238f46f8f), which includes instructions on how to turn it off.

I didn't see any mention of a May 2021 Win10 update... but I noticed yesterday that my hard drive was chugging "uncontrollably", with 100% utilization --- to the point that everything else on my computer became unresponsive.   I waited it out, for quite a few minutes, until I was finally able to gain access to my system.   I rebooted... it was a rather long boot sequence... and I immediately noticed the "Weather icon" displaying news and interests on the taskbar.   I was able to find the "turn off" option on my own.

Is this the 21H1 update that you've mentioned elsewhere?  Because in my Windows Update history, it's showing the last "feature update" installed was 20H2 (on 10/25/20).

No, in your case it isn't the 21H1 update .  Rather, it has been a phased rollout but it is included in the 21H1 update. From this article, Group configuration: news and interests on the Windows taskbar (https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/group-configuration-news-and-interests-on-the-windows-taskbar/ba-p/2281005?ocid=AID3031635&utm_issue=May2021), published last month:

News and interests on the taskbar will begin rolling out to Windows 10 users today. We are taking a measured approach starting with the April 2021 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10, and broad availability will occur in phases. Devices running Windows 10, version 1909 (and later) who have installed the May 2021 Windows monthly update (or later) will be included in this phased rollout.

I'm on 20H2 build 19042.985 ... no News/Interest on my machine yet.

I haven't installed the optional 21H1 yet.  Not really in a hurry.  I won't mind the weather icon in the taskbar, but the news function doesn't interest me, I get bombarded with enough news as it is.

I ended up disabling it. The icon only setting merely shows if it is full sun, partly cloudy, etc. I have a weather site pinned to the taskbar and it opens quickly when I want to check the weather forecast. Selecting only local and tech as news interests didn't result in much of a change to the news stories shown.  As an experiment, I tried blocking various news sources but that only resulted in various unheard of sources from all over the country.  In addition, it was too easy for it top "pop up" when moving the cursor to select something else.

Oh ... I was hoping it would show temperature in the taskbar if you went spartan (like it used to be possible to do with apps like WeatherBug, Singer's Weather Watcher, etc).  I can look outside and see if the sun is shining  ;)

I've seen several examples of this News/Interest that look similar to the attached, I guess that is the display if you don't go the 'icon only' route?

What weather site did you pin?

Yes, that is what just the icon shows.  The option to "show icon and text" adds the local temperature and a description, i.e., Partly sunny.  However, with the show icon and text, scrolling past it can quickly bring up the display shown in the attached Snip & Sketch. It seems to take a bit of a slower scroll past the icon only for the display to pop up.

I just pinned the MSN Weather page, https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/.  I like that I can easily check "My Places" and see the weather where family and friends are located (included NC :) ).

I just updated to the 21H1 version (these numbers remind of the name of a virus instead of an update anyway) and no such an icon on the Taskbar.

If you aren't seeing News and Interest on your taskbar, first try right-clicking on the taskbar to see if it is available.  If not and you wish to check it out, KB5001391 is available in the Microsoft Update Catalog (https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5001391).

Now everyone is getting it ...

I turned it off.  It annoyed me.

Via Bleeping Computer at Microsoft fixes Windows 10 'News and Interests' annoyances (https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-fixes-windows-10-news-and-interests-annoyances/?fbclid=IwAR1XfcZNnAAQFTb-uyojkoEy9hEFC-iQ-ldD0z-qpK81xAItOnwDrPKA-EE), News and Interests now has an "Open on hover" option in the submenu (right-click the Windows taskbar to access).  You can then uncheck the default "Open on hover" setting.

With the "Open on hover" option unchecked, you can select the "Show icon and text" option and see the temperature/weather description.  :)
