I forgot to update this topic with the latest build release.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10565 released to the Fast Ring.

Aside from changes to Skype, messaging, Tab preview in Microsoft Edge, etc., based on problems people have been having, a major change in this build is device activation improvements:
Quote
We have received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup. Refer to the Insider Hub for more information on these activation improvements including requirements.

From today, https://twitter.com/GabeAul/status/654744421489995776k:

@GabeAul We don't usually do ISOs for Fast Ring builds, but we heard feedback that these would be helpful to try the new activation paths.

Insider Build 11102 released to the Fast Ring.

New: New history menu in Microsoft Edge

Known issues:

Quote

Some PC games will crash switching from windowed mode to full screen, upon game resolution change, or upon launch due to a bug in Windows graphics stack. We have observed this with The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, and Metal Gear Solid V but it may occur with other titles as well.
With this build (and with the last build), applications such as Narrator, Magnifier, and third-party assistive technologies may experience intermittent issues or crashes. If you rely on screen readers or other software, you should not use this build. This issue will be fixed with the next build.
You might see a WSClient.dll error dialog after logging in. We’re working on a fix for this but as a workaround, you can run the following in Command Prompt with administrative rights: schtasks /delete /TN “\Microsoft\Windows\WS\WSRefreshBannedAppsListTask” /F
While attempting to update to this build, your PC may show a message that your wireless card is not compatible with Windows 10. The workaround is to visit the support page for your PC or wireless card and install the newest driver that is available.
The Connect button does not show up in Action Center.

Lots of bug fixes and the WSClient.dll error continues.  However, of note is the following known issue:
Quote
If you choose “Reset This PC” under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery – your PC will be in an unusable state. There is no workaround if your PC gets into this state and you will need to reinstall Windows. This issue will be fixed in the next build. You can still rollback to the previous build if for some reason this build doesn’t work out for you. This bug also existed in Build 14251 so please avoid resetting your PC on these builds.

Known issuesWe have only one known issue for this build. If you’re using Hyper-V  and upgrade to this build with more than one vswitch or have multiple  virtual networking adapters (including legacy), you may lose networking  connectivity after upgrade. To get network connectivity back, there are  two workarounds available:

Note:  “Reset This PC” under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery should now work as expected.

There are several updates of interest for Extensions in Microsoft Edge, including that extensions are now available from the Windows Store, which makes more sense than the way they started.  In addition, AdBlock and Adblock Plus are available in the Windows Store (finally).  See the referenced blog post for other Edge changes.

This update includes a very long list of fixes and the know issues seems to be getting shorter.

Lots of fixes and LastPass extension added for Microsoft Edge.  For anyone wanting to adjust their Privacy settings, you may want to hold off on this build:

Quote
Navigating to the Privacy pages in Settings app will crash the Settings app and prevent you from adjusting your privacy settings. Your privacy settings already set will remain intact after updating to this build. If this is a blocker for you, you can move to the Slow ring until this bug is fixed or be sure to set your privacy settings before updating to this build.

Some new things

Office Online for Microsoft Edge: Use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Sway Online without needing Office installed. The Office Online extension is the quickest way to view, edit, create Office files in Microsoft Edge! You can also quickly access your recent files, thanks to integration with OneDrive and OneDrive for Business. Windows Store Update: A Store update (Version 11606.1000.43.0) is rolling out today that includes some good performance improvements to prevent the Store from crashing and using up too much resources on your devices. You should see an overall improvement navigating the Store and visiting app pages.

Activation Improvements:

...As part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and starting with this Insider Preview build, we’re introducing the Activation Troubleshooter that will help you address most commonly encountered activation issues on Genuine Windows devices including those caused by hardware changes. For example – if your device has a digital license (formerly called “digital entitlement”) for Windows 10 Pro from a previously installed activated Windows 10 build but you accidentally re-installed Windows 10 Home on such a device, the troubleshooter will automatically guide you through upgrading to Windows 10 Pro and activate Windows. You can launch the troubleshooter by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and select Troubleshoot.

Also included is the ability to link your Microsoft account (MSA) to the activation digital license with this Insider Preview build.

Additional information on improvements and fixes is in the referenced blog post.

Known issues for PC
  • Support for kernel debugging over 1394 has been removed, but will be  available in an upcoming kit release. A work-around will be posted to  the Debugging Tools for Windows Blog (https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/windbg/) shortly.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader crashes when you try to launch it.
  • Cortana’s text to speech capabilities is not working in this build.  For example, Cortana won’t be able to read text messages out loud for  you, tell jokes, sing, or give verbal prompts.
  • When clicking on the power button on the Start menu, it closes the  Start menu without opening the flyout with restart/shutdown options  appearing. As a workaround – you can right-click on the Start button (or  WIN + X) and choose to shutdown via this menu instead.
  • Apps such as Yahoo Mail, Trivia Crack, Google and the Skype  Translator Preview app will crash in this build due to a compatibility  issue from a recent platform change.
  • The Settings app may crash on certain editions of Windows 10 when  navigating to different settings pages due to a missing .dll file. We  are working on getting this fixed soon.

New issues have been added to the blog post regarding Build 14926.

PC: "UPDATED: After updating to this build, built-in Windows 10 apps such as Calculator, Alarms & Clock, and Voice Recorder may not work. To get these apps working again, go to the Store and re-download/install them."

Mobile: Two new issues added. Via Brandon LeBlanc on Twitter, a hard reset fixes the issues for most people. He also shared this link: http://blog.changewindows.org/uncategorized/you-might-want-to-reconsider-installing-14926-on-mobile/

Based on Twitter comments, many people are pleased with the introduced change to collapse the app list in the Start menu.  Personally, I've found that feature faster to navigate than the previous method but to each their own.

The new Build also includes a Photo update, a new Windows Update icon, expanded Active Hours to 18 and more.  As usual, see the blog post for completed details.

Known Issues for PC:
Quote
If you have 3rd party antivirus products such as Bitdefender, Kaspersky Antivirus, F-Secure Antivirus and Malwarebytes installed on your PC – your PC might not be able to complete the update to this build and roll-back to the previous build.

Based on feedback I've received from Advanced Setup on the Malwarebytes forum, with Malwarebytes (an anti-malware software NOT and A/V), try disabling Rootkit scanner and the Web blocker.

Note:  Regarding the known issue for PC's with certain A/V products, including Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, after disabling Malicious Website Protection (Premium version), the install of 14946 proceeded. Note that even with uninstalling Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit, deleting the Program Data folder, restarting/reinstalling, Microsoft Edge does not launch, I'm finding that Edge still does not launch (Bug Report updated, https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/issues/9256746/).

Today we have released Cumulative Update Build 16232.1004 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring running Build 16232. The primary goal of this update is to test our servicing pipeline. This update should not require you to have to reboot unless you happen to have Notepad.exe open. This update only revs the version of the OS and includes a updated binary version of Notepad.exe and nothing else. It does introduce the following issues to be aware of:

Make sure you’ve setup Mixed Reality before taking this update.
After installing a language pack or feature-on-demand like .NET 3.5, your PC may be offered this update again and fail.

This update will only remain available until the next WIP Fast build is released.

Title: Skip Ahead for Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring
Post by: Corrine on July 25, 2017, 08:51:11 PM
From the Feedback Hub, https://aka.ms/m2aq4i (https://aka.ms/m2aq4i):  Skip Ahead for Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring

Quote
Starting today, Windows Insiders in the Fast ring will see a new drop-down in their flight settings via Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program to skip ahead to the next release of Windows 10.

(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcompass.microsoft.com%2Fassets%2Fb4%2Fc1%2Fb4c1afef-157c-4b21-b2bd-d5c250df584e.png%3Fn%3Dskip-ahead.png&hash=2d8cdc212a7b50f78ced00027c6fb53c)

We are now at the stage in the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where we’re working hard to bash all the bugs and stabilize so it’s the best Windows 10 release yet for all our customers. As we work to prepare the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for the world, our engineering teams are beginning work on the next release of Windows 10 from our Development Branch. Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who choose to skip ahead will be given the opportunity to start trying out these builds in addition to receiving app updates again for many of the inbox apps in Windows 10 such as Photos, Skype, Groove, and Movies & TV.

To stabilize the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for release, we have “forked” the release into its own branch we call “RS3_RELEASE”. Many Windows Insiders will recall we did the same thing for the Windows 10 Creators Update when we started flighting builds from the “RS2_RELEASE” branch. Going forward, Windows Insiders in the Fast ring will continue to get builds for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update from this branch. However, Windows Insiders who choose to skip ahead will receive builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch.

To summarize:
  • Fast ring: Builds from RS3_RELEASE branch with no inbox app updates.
  • Fast ring + Skip Ahead: Builds from RS_PRERELEASE with inbox app updates from the Store.
Since this fork just occurred, the builds from the RS_PRERELEASE and RS3_RELEASE branches will be virtually identical. But at some point in the future, build numbers in the RS_PRERELEASE branch will jump ahead, engineering teams will start checking in new code, and things diverge. When this happens – you will not be able to leave Skip Ahead and go back to builds from the RS3_RELEASE branch without reinstalling Windows. Once the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is released to the general public, this skip ahead option will go away and the Fast ring will be back to receiving builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch for the next Windows 10 release and inbox app updates from the Store will be fully restored to all Windows Insiders in the Fast and Slow rings.

Before choosing to skip ahead – there are a few things to keep in mind: builds from RS_PRERELEASE will get less stable as teams start checking in new code. So just like Insider Preview builds usually are after a Windows 10 release, things will likely be a little rough. If this concerns you or makes you uncomfortable – don’t choose to skip ahead and simply wait for the Fast ring to transition back to RS_PRERELEASE down the road. We also need to have Windows Insiders in the Fast ring helping us get the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ready and giving us feedback on issues they are experiencing. So there will be a limit as to how many Windows Insiders can skip ahead. Once that limit is met, the UI on the flight settings page will notify Windows Insiders trying to choose to skip ahead that it’s been closed.
We are excited to experiment with putting early builds of the next release of Windows 10 in the hands of some Windows Insiders as we stabilize and prepare a release to go out to customers.

Known Issues updated for Build 17063:

Quote
ADDED 1/4/18: Some PCs will bugcheck (GSOD) when entering into Connected Standby.
ADDED 1/4/18: When you open Task View immediately after an upgrade, Timeline may not be visible. If you encounter this, wait 15-30min and try launching Task View again.
ADDED 1/4/18: We’re investigating an issue where some Bluetooth devices don’t work on this build and Device Manager shows error 43 for these drivers.
ADDED 1/4/18: The Settings app may crash on certain pages if the Settings window isn’t big enough. Windows Update Settings is one of the pages impacted. If you’re experiencing this, maximizing the Settings window (so it’s full screen) will resolve it.
ADDED 1/4/18: In certain cases, USB devices with unreliable connections may cause bugchecks (GSOD) on PCs.

UPDATE 1/18: Today we have released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17074.1002 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build is the same as the version of Build 17074 released last week with 2 additional fixes. We have fixed the issue causing AMD PCs to become unbootable – which means we have removed the block for AMD PCs we put in place last week. And we also fixed the issue causing certain devices to hang on the boot screen after upgrading if virtualization is enabled in the BIO

Windows Security Improvements

Windows Defender is now Windows Security in Settings: We have renamed the settings page under Settings > Update & Security from “Windows Defender” to “Windows Security. This settings page has also been redesigned – putting emphasis on the various protection areas to keep you safe and secure on your PC.

Account Protection Pillar in Windows Defender: We’ve made it easier for users to protect their identity when signing in to Windows with the new Account Protection pillar in Windows Defender Security Center.  Account Protection will encourage password users to set up Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint or PIN for faster sign in, and will notify Dynamic lock users if Dynamic lock has stopped working because their phone or device Bluetooth is off.

Device Security Pillar in Windows Defender: We’re giving you greater insight into the security features integrated in your Windows device. The Device Security page provides you with status reporting and management of security features built into your devices – including toggling features on to provide enhanced protections.

A few other changes include the addition of F11 to Microsoft Edge, changes to the Privacy Settings navigation and lots of changes/improvements.  Note, however the known issue:

Quote
Up until today – Insiders who opted into Skip Ahead previously were receiving the same exact RS4 builds as Insiders in the Fast ring since Build 17017. Skip Ahead never “turned off” and many Insiders remained in Skip Ahead since joining at the beginning of RS4. Starting today – Windows Insiders who opted into Skip Ahead will now start receiving new builds for RS5 which is our next Windows 10 release. These builds will come from the RS_PRERELEASE branch.

Windows Update Improvements

Keeping PCs Up-to-date: In an effort to prevent PCs from becoming out of date, we are introducing a change in behavior to Windows Update that is designed to be more proactive at keeping PCs updated. In RS4, now when Windows Update scans, downloads, and installs on a PC with AC power – it will prevent the PC from going to sleep when it is not in active use, for up to 2 hours when receiving an update in order to give Windows Update more opportunity to succeed. If you are not seeing this new behavior, let us know by sending in feedback via Feedback Hub.

{{{SNIP}}}

Some Insiders may have noticed a new message when holding down the power button which says “Please release the power button. We just need a few more seconds to shut down”. This is an Insider-only feature that gathers additional diagnostic data for situations where holding down the power button was used to recover an unresponsive or nonfunctional system.  It is important to note that holding down the power button is not the appropriate way to shutdown/reboot a system that is functioning properly. See this support page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13770/windows-shut-down-sleep-hibernate-your-pc) for additional information on how to properly shutdown your PC.

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17134 (RS4) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build has no new features and includes the fixes from KB4100375 as well as some fixes for general reliability of the OS. As Build 17133 progressed through the rings, we discovered some reliability issues we wanted to fix. In certain cases, these reliability issues could have led to a higher percentage of (BSOD) on PCs for example. Instead of creating a Cumulative Update package to service these issues, we decided to create a new build with the fixes included. This just reinforces that Windows Insiders are critical to helping us find and fix issues before releasing feature updates to all our customers so thank you!

Another new interesting feature is the ability to highlight any words or phrase in Notepad and you can search Bing.

There is a lot more.  Check out the referenced blog post for detailed information.

What’s new in Build 17672
Windows Security Improvements

The Windows Security Center (WSC) service now requires antivirus products to run as a protected process to register. Products that have not yet implemented this will not appear in the Windows Security UI, and Windows Defender Antivirus will remain enabled side-by-side with these products.

For testing purposes, you can disable this new behavior in Windows Insider builds by creating the following registry key and rebooting the device.  This key will be removed as we get closer to release.

Going forward, RS5 builds will come from the RS5_RELEASE branch. For Insiders who chose to “skip ahead”, 19H1 builds will continue to come from the RS_PRERELEASE branch. Insiders can see the branch name in the watermark at the lower right of their desktop. Right now, the builds from these branches are largely the same which is why we’re only doing a single blog post for both of today’s new builds. However, in the future we will be doing separate blog posts for each. To summarize all this, see the below graphic that explains what Skip Ahead is.

Check out the blog post for new features, fixes/improvements and known issues.  Also note the next Bug Bash:

Join us for our second RS5 Bug Bash running from July 27th through to August 5th, 2018. You know the drill – get your quest on! With the second RS5 Bug Bash, Insiders in the Slow ring can also participate! AND we’ll be doing a Mixer webcast on Wednesday August 1st at 10am PDT. Also – you can enter to win a trip to Microsoft’s campus here in Redmond, WA!
