Windows 10 October 2018 Update Released
« on: October 02, 2018, 09:16:11 PM »
The October 2018 Update has been released.  Note, however that it is in a phased and controlled rollout.

Quote
While we encourage you to wait until the update is offered to your device, if you’re an advanced user on an actively serviced version of Windows 10 and would like to install the Windows 10 October 2018 Update now, you can do so by manually checking for updates. In the Search box in the taskbar, type “Check for updates.” Once there, simply click “Check for updates” to begin the download and installation process. We are also streamlining the ability for users who seek to manually check for updates by limiting this to devices with no known key blocking issues, based on our ML model.  If we detect that your device has a compatibility issue, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved, even if you “Check for updates.”  You can also watch this video that outlines how to get the October 2018 Update.

See How to get the Windows 10 October 2018 Update - Windows Experience Blog for additional information about the update, including "Improving the update experience".

Used "Check for updates" and was surprised to see that they considered a 2013 vintage machine compatible... They were WRONG !

Every time I tried to open Mozilla Thunderbird, I'd get a BSOD before it finished downloading all my mail. After that happened for the fourth time, I "went back to previous version of Windows".

Everything appears to be working now.

IMHO:
Don't rely on MS to make a 100% accurate compatibility decision.
Don't install this until you have time to fool around.

Don't check for updates.

I guess they don't bother to see if it will actually work because there are too many different hardware setups.

I wouldn't go that far....

Windows 10 allows you to go back a version, but it's time consuming.

What does that make my 2008 machine?  :)  It ran fine with 1809 installed and is now on the next build moving toward Spring 2019.  However, I don't use Mozilla Thunderbird.

Quicken, Firefox, LibreOffice, & Edge worked fine, but every time I tried to check my Email, I got a BSOD just after Thunderbird opened.

All my appointments are in the Thunderbird calendar. For a while I was very glad that I also jot them down on an actual paper calendar.

Makes me wonder if I should turn off automatic updates for the time being. Google searches mention other problems, but not this one.

I updated without a hitch, haven't had any problems. My Thunderbird mail works fine with the new version. I haven't found any problems with this version, so far. It doesn't mean I wont.

Do you use the "ShutUp10" anti-telemetry software (or similar)?

Since I do have an Intel processor, with recently updated drivers...
It's occurred to me that I may have outsmarted myself by hiding whatever MS was using to detect incompatible systems.

Rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) paused for all users while isolated reports of users missing some files after updating is investigated. See known issues in https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4464619/windows-10-update-history

Some additional info on the issues that further explains the potential for deletion of files and One Drive connection:

Apparently, it causes problems with task manager as well.

I will definitely be deferring installation. Yikes.  Looks like time to update my backups.

I didn’t have any problems with deleted folders, but just backed everything up in case ...

Only issue I’ve seen is the refusal of my laptop to go to sleep.

I do use shutup 10, and it did not create any problems as well. I do run a update check and reset after a upgrade.
