Quote
Please note that the October 2020 Update will be offered to Insiders in the Release Preview Channel via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update at first. This means Insiders will need to go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and choose to download and install 20H2. Once an Insider updates their PC to the October 2020 Update, they will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (like the monthly update process).

See the blog post for additional information on getting the update or joining the Release Preview Ring.

  • We fixed an issue with a possible elevation of privilege in win32k.
  • We fixed an issue with the Group Policy service that might recursively delete critical files in alphabetic order from %systemroot%\systm32. • Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Media, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Authentication, Windows Virtualization, and Windows Kernel.

I often wait on these major updates... but with time on my hands today, I went for it.

The update [from 20-04] went quicker than a monthly cumulative update!
I haven't used it yet, to say if anything unusual/different is happening... aside from noticing the START menu seem different (and more colorful).

Yes, changes to the Start Menu are part of the new features in the October 2020 update.  It adds more transparency to the tiles matching the color scheme of the app, making your favorite apps easier to discover.   If you use Dark Mode, you can also change the color of the menu.

In the continuing effort to kill off the Control Panel ... the classic System page has been removed in this update. If you open the Control Panel, System is still present, but opening it will take you to the About section of Settings.

I had/have a Control Panel icon on my desktop, and it still appears to be viable.

It is the System settings that were moved to Settings from the Control Panel with the added feature being able to copy both Device specifications and Windows specifications,

It took me 2 hours to install the update. No problems during the installation.

No picture sign-in option anymore...

I checked and I see the picture sign-in option is still listed at Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options as the last item on the list.  Try setting it up again.
