Hi Corrine

Thank you for being so patient with me.  I think that I have done it now and have removed those pesty programs.  I was so annoyed as they just took control of my computer.

I WILL DEFINITELY CONSIDER UNCHECKY.  IS IT A FREE PROGRAM?

Anyhow here is the Final Report.  Thanks again.  Heather

Hi, Heather.

It was my pleasure.

Yes, Unchecky is free.  Although from two years ago, this article will give you an idea how Unchecky works:  How to Avoid Junkware Offers with Unchecky.  Avoiding third party download sites and using the vendor site is always advisable, although still not a guarantee that the download will be without unwanted extras.  If in doubt, feel free to start a topic in the Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! forum.

Thank you so much Corrine.  I am now reluctant to download any free programs.

How do I know which is the official site as they are usually several?

Also, I think I read in some of your articles on here that (or to me) that I should use Internet Explorer as my Browser so that I receive Microsoft Updates Automatically, as these automatic updates help to protect your computer.  Is that correct?

Can you please send me information on how to set up my Internet Explorer Browser if that is the case, as Chrome keep being want to be my Main Browser.  At the moment it is Google and I am not sure which one I should have.

I am so happy now.

I look forward to your response and thanks again.

Hi, Heather.

Where would you download Google Chrome or WinPatrol from?  If it were me and I didn't know, I would search for the program and the search results would include links to the download.  However, I would select the link that has Google.com or WinPatrol.com in the URL.

No, Heather, you do not have to use Internet Explorer in order to receive Microsoft updates automatically.  Internet Explorer receives security updates along with the other updates on the second Tuesday of the month through Windows Update.  To check your update settings go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings.  I suggest unchecking the box for the option for recommended updates and check those updates separately.  You could also select the option to "download and let me decide" if you wish to wait a day or two after the security updates have been released.

As to which browser you wish to use, you can use IE, Google Chrome or Firefox (also installed) as your preferred browser.  The choice is yours.  I do suggest that you install Adblock Plus (ABP) for each browser.  Go to https://adblockplus.org/.  Depending on which browser you are using at the time, you'll see a green "Install for ... ".  Go ahead and proceed with that install.  However, be sure to return to that same page and then click the icon for the other two browsers installed on your computer and install ABP for those browsers as well.  Not only will it speed up page loading, there will be less chance of clicking on a malicious advertisement.

Thanks Corrine.

I have installed Unchecky.com.

I will install Adblock Plus as you have instructed.

I will go ahead and make sure that I am set up to receive Microsoft Updates, but I have a question.

If I uncheck the box for the option for recommended updates and check those separately, how would I know how to recognise the ones that I should keep.  Would they be all marked as Microsoft ones?

Thanks again.

Heather

Corrine

No, that is the point, they may not be for Microsoft programs.  Some may be drivers (for example, HP, Intel or Realtek).  Generally speaking, if you aren't having video or random BSOD (blue screen of death) issues with you Windows 7 computer, you might not want to install drivers via Windows update.

OK, as I don't have videos or BSOD which box should I tick or just leave it as it is.

If you say to leave it as it is, when would my updates be done?

How long can my Laptop run without updates?

Doesn't the updated help to protect from virus also?

I look forward to hearing your views.  Thanks again.

Hi, Heather.

I don't know what setting you had to begin with or if you've changed it.  With the "download but let me decide" option, after the updates have been downloaded, there will be a notice in the system tray that updates are ready to be installed.  Click it and it will open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update so you can click "Install Updates" then.  Conversely, if you are in the middle of a project, you can wait until you've finished what you were working on and then click the notice and install the updates.  With the automatic updates, as applicable, you'll receive a notice to restart the computer in order to install the updates.

The "Important" updates are the security updates which, along with other security software, indeed helps protect from remote code execution, address spoofing, etc.  The box checked under "Microsoft Update" takes care of Microsoft Office and other Microsoft software.

Recommended updates aren't security updates.  However, if you just want to let Microsoft take control, go ahead and check the box for Recommended updates.

Thanks Corrine.  I understand now and will go ahead and set up for the security checks.

I have got another query.  I have been having trouble with the spell check and now gets a box that pops up with a message.  The heading is:

Internet Explorer Security.

A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer.

Name:        Microsoft Spell Checker Facility

Publisher:    Microsoft Windows

This program will open outside and there are two boxes for me to click one of them.

Allow Protected      Don't Allow

Although I click Allow as it looks like a Microsoft Product it keeps coming back from time to time.

There is also a message that also says "Internet Explorer's Protected Mode helps protect your computer.  If you do not trust this web site, do not open this program.

Can you explain what I should do.

Thanks.

Heather

Corrine

Hi, Heather.

The next time you receive the notice for the Microsoft Spellchecker Facility, ensure the "Do not show me the Warning for this program" check box is ticked before you click on Allow.

As to IE's Protected Mode, although an older article, the description here can explain it better than I can:  What does Internet Explorer protected mode do?.

Thanks Corrine for explaining how to deal with the Spell Check reminder.

I will read the article on here of "What Does Internet Explorer Protect Mode Do.

My computer is working alright now and I will try and keep away from those free programs and thanks very much for your help and patience.
