Hackers got into my online checking account.I was stupid and called the number supposed to be Microsoft. luckily I caught on before they got away with any money. I guess my bank noticed unusual activity and called me. The account was locked. i went to the bank today to close the hacked and open another account. the bank personnel advised me to take my computer to best buy to have it wiped. I don't want to loose my photos and music. Is there anything I can do myself to secure my computer but save my personal stuff and not pay a fortune to Best Buy?

QuoteHackers got into my online checking account.I was stupid and called the number supposed to be Microsoft.

Please provide more details as to how this happened---without listing any pertinent data.  Reason:  just because your checking account was hacked/invaded does not mean that your computer has been infected.  Did you respond to some telephone number in an email?  Click on a link in some email, etc?  Is your email a webmail account or do you download your email to your computer?  Other details, etc. . . .

I will give you a for instance.  An acquaintance has told me that they were informed that a lot of their personal and vital data was floating around in the so-called "dark web."  This has not been because their computer was hacked but because various institutions that had their data were hacked.  All of those institutions (more than one!) subsequently offered their customers free "identity protection" programs, but the personal data has already been exposed now.

Thus some of your personal data might be floating around in the 'internet ether' but your computer might be perfectly clean.

What some of the specialists here can do is to analyze your computer for various kinds of malware and infections.  Hopefully one of those specialists will be along soon to provide you with further assistance.  In the meantime beside providing more information as requested above you might also wish to review the following thread " https://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=423.0 ".

Depending upon what our specialists might find you MAY or MAY NOT need to get your computer wiped.  Bank advice along these lines will be by nature very generic.  They will make various general assumptions and advise you accordingly.  But their generalities may not fit the specifics of your situation.  So this is just one more thing to keep in mind.

I got a very large pop up with audio stating that my computer was locked up and that I shouldn't try to shut it down. I did try to shut it down but when it opened up again the pop up was still there with a phone number and microsoft logo. I stupidly thought that I was calling microsoft. My email is Yahoo and has been for many years,

I'm lost. I Thought I downloaded the Farber program but don't see it on my desktop. Am I supposed to have Firefox and Chrome and Internet Explorer or just one. I dont see anything as described in the upper right corner.

xrobwx71

If you are using Chrome you can click the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner, then look for downloads, in there will be the Farbar file FRST64.exe.

When you click on downloads, you'll see the FRST64.exe it will also have 3 dots. Click those 3 dots and choose show in folder. Right-click on the FRST64.exe and copy and paste it on your Desktop.

Await further instructions.

mare_wbpa,

If you downloaded "FRST64.exe" then possibly it went into your default download folder.  So which browser did you use to download "FRST64.exe"?

If you used a chromium-based browser (including Chrome and its many clones) then use xrobwx71's instructions concerning the "3 dots" to possibly find the location of the file.

If you used Firefox (or any other gecko-based browser) then press "ctrl + J" to open the Downloads folder to possibly find the location of the file.

If you still cannot find the file then try downloading it again but also list here every step that you take and everything that you see when you are trying to download it.

If you find the file then proceed with the instructions for using it.

Hi, mare_wbpa.

Repeat what you did above, and when you get the blue screen, click on the More info button. After that, click on the Run anyway button. FRST will open, and you will click on Scan, to let the app run.

After I clicked Run Anyway all Igot was a spinning wheel turning nect to cursor.

mare_wbpa

I restarted to get rid of spinning wheel. when I clicked the desktop icon I got a yellow and white box asking if I want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device.

Corrine

You need to allow FRST to run so you can get the logs for DR M to analyze.
