Pale Moon has been updated to version 33.3.0.  This is a major development update.

Important notes with this version:

  • From this version forward, all 64-bit releases require a processor with AVX capabilities! Please keep en eye on the forum for announcements of 64-bit SSE builds by the community if you are on particularly old or otherwise limited hardware that does not support AVX.
  • For Linux users: Starting with this version, our binaries are built with gcc 11 on a still conservative but more modern build platform (Oracle Linux 8). As a result, there may be some lib incompatibilities if you are still running on a particularly old distro for some reason. While we try to serve as broad of a Linux base as possible with our binaries, our lowest common denominator will occasionally shift to newer distros as a result of O.S. life cycles, compiler capabilities and available libraries.

See the Release Notes for the long list of changes and fixes as well as Implementation Notes.

Update: To get the update now, select "Help" from the Pale Moon menu at the upper left of the browser window.  Select About Pale Moon > Check for Updates.

To Windows users of Pale Moon 64 bit versions prior to 33.3.0, as Corrine's update note indicates this new 33.3.0 update requires AVX support.  If you are using a recent version of Pale Moon that is prior to 33.3.0 and your computer DOES NOT have AVX support, then when you go to "Help" -> "Check for updates" you WILL NOT get updated.  You will get a message saying "There are no updates available."

The recent versions of Pale Moon have a built in checker for whether or not a particular computer has AVX support, so if your computer does not support AVX then Pale Moon will not update.

If you are using a Pale Moon 64 bit version prior to 33.3.0 your browser will continue to function as normal BUT it will not be updated and eventually it may become more and more vulnerable to security issues.  [My Pale Moon version 33.2.1 still works as usual even though it will not update.]

-------

QuoteWindows 32-bit builds will not be changing their requirements, and continue to use a minimum of SSE2.

Pale Moon 32 bit users seemingly will not have this AVX support requirement and will continue to be updated.

[In order to stay current with updates it would seem possible for Pale Moon 64 bit users to downgrade to 32 bit if one so desired.  BUT one would need to be extra careful in doing so to avoid possibly losing profile data.  One should always back up and/or make a copy to elsewhere of all current profiles in Pale Moon before attempting such a downgrade.  I cannot supply any additional information on this possibility.  Better help in this regard would need to be obtained at the Pale Moon forums at " https://forum.palemoon.org/index.php ".]

-------

In the first link listed above Pale Moon seems to indicate that in the future there may be some "community builds" that may appear that will have updates for Pale Moon 64 bit for Windows that will not require AVX support.  But my interpretation is that these "community builds" will need to be supplied by third parties.  My guess is that these possible future builds may be eventually found in the following forum section at Pale Moon " https://forum.palemoon.org/viewforum.php?f=40 " (Contributed 3rd Party Builds).
