I have a Dell Dimension computer and am using Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002. I have been using Winpatrol Plus for several years and Scotty has, until now, always appeared in the taskbar at start up. I have just updated to the latest version and he has disappeared! In order to see the Winpatrol screen I have to use Start/All Programs/Winpatrol Explorer. The box in Options, 'Hide Scotty Taskbar Icon' is unchecked. Please help me to get Scotty back?  :sos: Regards,
Paul Reeve

Hi, Paul.

Welcome to LandzDown Forum.   I was reading your post in the WinPatroL Facebook group when an e-mail notice arrived that there was a new post here.  Fortunately, you provided additional information here so I can respond more completely.

Bill told me some time ago that there has been some reports of this and it appears to be related to a bug in Windows XP since they've added a "hide inactive icon" feature.  Even if you've told Windows to show Scotty, sometimes Windows thinks he's not active enough.  Microsoft acknowledges the problem and claimed it was fixed in Windows XP SP2 but he has had Vista users report similar issues.

What you can do is . . .

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and under processes verify that WinPatrol.exe is running.  If it is listed then Scotty is on patrol.   The main tabbed interface is a separate component which can be opened separately.  You can access this from your Start button -> Programs -> WinPatrol -> WinPatrol Explorer.

When you click Close on the main tabbed interface it will remove WinPatrolEx.exe from memory but the monitor portion which should show up as an icon will still be on patrol.

If Scotty is still not showing in the taskbar, first try checking the "Hide Scotty Taskbar Icon" and then unchecking it again.  If that doesn't work, the information at http://winhlp.com/node/16 may solve the problem.

Please let me know how you make out.

Hurray Corrine!! He's back and appears to be none the worse for his time away. Having read about the difference between WinpatrolEx.exe and WinPatrol.exe, I double-clicked on the one to start Scotty and he appeared, then I read your reply and did as you suggested, re-started the computer to check that he was there and not just a figment of my imagination and sure enough there he was!! So many thanks for your very prompt reply and help.  :flowers:

You're welcome, Paul.  I'm glad Scotty is back where he belongs.

I hope nobody minds, but I edited the topic and subject lines of all of the above posts to reflect "Scotty" rather than the original "Scooty".   :D

Scooty was appropriate when Scotty had scooted out of the taskbar, but now that he's returned to where he belongs, it does make more sense.
