The "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.  Whether you call it Veteran's Day, Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, November 11th is a time to put aside politics and pay tribute to all who died for their country.  It is also a perfect time to thank the Veterans in whatever country you live in.

With thoughts of Mitch the "Phantom Phixer" and Larry, "Ghost".

The "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.  For mitch, the Phantom Phixer, who kept the F4s flying. For Ghost, we remember, always.

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind."

In remembrance of a hometown hero, Robert Louis Zwerlein
Airman
VA-46, CVW-17, USS FORRESTAL, TF 77, 7TH FLEET
United States Navy

On 29 July 1967, as a result of an electrical malfunction, a Zuni rocket was accidentally fired across the flight deck of the Forrestal into a plane waiting to take off. Zwerlein was on the port side of the flight deck at the time as a plane captain, making a prelaunch aircraft check of the A-4 Skyhawk piloted by Lt Cmdr John McCain (who would be shot down over Hanoi three months later). The jet fuel from the damaged plane ignited, beginning a chain reaction that exploded bombs and other ordnance aboard the carrier. He was among the 134 men killed in the Forrestal disaster (another 161 injured), the worst loss of life on a US Navy ship since World War II.  Of the 73 aircraft, 21 were destroyed and 40 were damaged.

He died on 01 August 1967 of the burns and injuries sustained in the fire.  He was 21.
