The rootkit scan was fine.  ETR was merely answering your question.  Read the first part of his response again.  :)

The malware was safely contained within the recycle bin and had no effect on your machine. The most likely cause for your problems would be a build up of garbage and crud. You have deleted old system recovery files already but make sure that you empty out your Internet browsing history store and delete unwanted cookies, etc - CCleaner is good for this. You may also want to try defragging your C:\ drive. Good housekeeping does wonders but stay away from registry cleaners.

Thank you. I am reassured.  And thank you very much for reviewing this whole thing for me.  :)

I went through and reconfigured CC Cleaner to the settings your link recommended.  I had not even looked through the options yet just use the default check lists minus the cookie removal, so did nothing in the advanced section and  made no changes to registry or anything. But I'm glad for the warning.

ok...have added and run CC cleaner (but saved all my cookies :D )

Why wouldn't you want to remove the unwanted cookies?

I DO want to remove unwanted cookies.  But remember you are dealing with a techno-feeb here.   I didn't see where to do that at first.

So until I found the place that I could pick the ones I wanted to keep, I kept them all.  Now that Corrine has posted her configuration suggestions I'll go back through and sort the cookies for the next time I use the cleaner.

Corrine

Why not make the "next time" sooner rather than later.

Let's take it a step further and protect your privacy by removing the "Flash Cookies" and changing the Adobe Flash settings:

Note:  If you use Quicken, do NOT use this program at this time as Quicken stores information in Flash cookies.

Download Flush Flash Cookies by Bobbi Flekman.
Select the Windows version and save flushflash.exe to your Desktop.
Double-click flushflash.exe to run it.
Select Everything.
Click Make it so!.
When the "Killed off all Flash cookies" window opens, click OK.
Close Flush Flash Cookies.

Next, go to the Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager and make the following settings:

-- Select the Second Tab from the left (Global Storage Settings)
-- Set the Storage Settings slider to None
-- Uncheck "Allow Third Party Flash Content to store data on your computer

I do not use Quicken.
Downloaded and clicked 'everything" and "make it so". Then got a message saying "no flash player folder present".  I didnt' change flash player settings yet.

Now what?  [and it seemed so simple!  why does my computer hate me?]

Corrine

Ah, then you don't have Adobe Flash installed.  Sorry, I had not checked your logs to see if it was there but, rather, was following up on the removing the excess.

I don't have Adobe flash? How am I seeing flash stuff then?  Shockwave Flash?

I guess I can get rid of the FlashFlush thing then....

@ Eric the Red:

I can't thank you enough for the CC Cleaner recommendation.  I had used the windows disk cleanup, but never noticed that it changed much of anything.  However after running CC cleaner the first time, there was a noticeable speed up in page load time...it really made a big difference.  And with Corrines configuration instructions, I feel like I can run it safely and often.

You guys rawk!

Glad to be of assistance  :breakkie:

ok...now I am confused.    I went to the site that checks your version of Adobe Flash and it says I have version 10,0,32,18 installed

So then, where is my flash player that the FlashFlush program couldn't find it?  I can never find the plugins...so frustrating.

pastywhitegurl

I just found out that I have lost both my session and my ability to log into a registered flash chat that that I have on my site.  I have apparently done something with all this cleaning, I suppose.    oh well, if I can't figure it out, I'll delete the chat and reinstall a new one.   always sumthin'....
