Hi,

My son's computer just got infected with the XP Security 2012 virus. I am unable to open any programs or files. I was able to run DDS and am attaching the log. I was not able to run Security Check.

Thanks for your help.

Corrine

Hi, tss210.

Merry Christmas, although this is certainly not the way you likely want to spend the holiday!

1)  Please download the following two files.  In the event you are blocked by the malware from downloading, it will be necessary to go to an uninfected computer and then transfer the files to the infected computer via CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.

FixNCR.reg
Bleeping Computer Downloads: RKill

2)  Insert the removable device into the infected computer and open the folder the drive letter associated with it. Double-click the FixNCR.reg file to fix the Registry on your infected computer.

3)  Copy the downloaded RKill file to the desktop of the infected computer.

  • Double-click rkill to run.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
  • Do NOT restart your computer after running rkill as the malware program(s) will start again.
Notes:

If you you receive security warnings about rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

4)  Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In addition to the MBAM log, please also include the attach.txt log from DDS.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your help. Merry Christmas to you too.

When I tried to run the FixNCR program I got the following message: Cannot import FixNCR.reg . Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.

I have not restarted the computer yet..Just want to make sure that I should.

Thanks again for you help.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum:  How to disable your security applications.

Now, please run ComboFix:

  • Note:  If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process.  Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.

  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I am trying to run Combofix but keep getting a message saying Windows cannot find 'NIRKMD'. I keep pressing 'OK' and when combofix finished and rebooted I got a message that MS Windows system has recovered from a serious error. A log was not created.

Also got this message:

Thanks for your help.

Check to see if ComboFix created the log anyway.  It would be located at C:\Qoobox\ComboFix.txt.  If so, copy/paste that log here as a reply.

If not available, right-click ComboFix on your desktop and delete it.  Then download a fresh copy from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

Save it to your desktop and follow the instructions as posted above.

Please update Java from http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.

MBAM Fresh
Scan with MBAM again:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
  • Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan

Please also provide a fresh DDS log.

Uninstalling older versions of Java JRE doesn't seem to uninstall the Java Console for that version, causing Firefox to accumulate multiple Java Console extensions located in the Firefox > Tools > Add-ons list.  Let's clean that up.

  • Make sure you already have the most recent version, Java SE Runtime Environment 6u30.
  • Go to C:\Program Files > Mozilla Firefox > extensions.
  • Delete the folders "{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-xxxx-ABCDEFFEDCBA}", where xxxx is the number of the JRE-version.  Keep the highest number as this is the latest version, i.e., 0030.

How is your son's computer now?

It seems to be running great!! He had a McAfee antivirus version on his computer from school, but I would like to switch to another anti virus program, after what happened. What do you recommend? Is there anything else he should install to avoid this in the future?

You have been a great help! :D

Corrine

Hi, tss210.

First, let's take care of a bit of clean-up and then talk about security for your son's computer.

Please do the following to implement cleanup procedures and also to reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note: In the event you wish to contribute to the ongoing development of ComboFix, the developer is accepting donations via PayPal.

Antivirus/Firewall:
As a student, I can understand that finances may be limited.  Although I am not a fan of McAfee, based on personal experience from several years ago, the Enterprise version is better than the consumer version.  In addition, free antivirus software programs that I recommend have become more limited.  Also, because he has a Windows XP computer, he would also need a software firewall to replace the firewall provided by McAfee.   The following antivirus software programs are free for personal use.

avast! 6 Home Edition
Microsoft Security Essentials

For a paid/licensed program, my personal preference is ESET, which has a separate stand-alone antivirus program as well as a suite, including firewall.

If the decision is made to switch from McAfee, there are a number of software firewall programs available in our software update forum:  Firewall Updates.

Additional Security:
I recommend updating Internet Explorer to IE 8 -- Download: Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

If the decision is made to stay with McAfee, you may want to make a one-time purchase of a license for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO.  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro

Having a firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software are not enough.  It is also necessary to stay current with security updates, not only Microsoft but also third-party, including Java and Adobe products.

To check if the computer is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:

  • Detects insecure versions of applications installed
  • Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
  • Assists you in updating your system and applications
Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html.  We have a WinPatrol help forum here at LandzDown to assist with any questions about WinPatrol.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
