Duckenfield accepted that he retired from the police two years after the disaster, aged 46 or 47, on a full pension, and that by doing so he avoided disciplinary proceedings being brought by the Police Complaints Authority.

Tomorrow marks the 26th year of the fight for truth and justice, while standing shoulder to shoulder with the bereaved and the survivors of Hillsborough.

Liverpool FC and Everton FC captains Steven Gerrard and Phil Jagielka will release 96 balloons from Anfield to mark the 26th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.  Steven Gerrard's cousin Jon Paul Gilhooley, 10, was the youngest victim of the tragedy.

A minute's silence is due to be held at the service and across the city at 3.06pm – the time the match was stopped on April 15, 1989.



Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne shows support for the Hillsborough campaign after they unveiled a banner at their home match against Lille last month.

It read: "Hillsborough, 25 years of lies...Justice for the 96!"

Finally, after 27 years of horror, heartbreak and struggle, the families have seen a jury deliver the verdict they, their loved ones, and those who suffered and survived but found themselves targets of South Yorkshire police’s ferocious campaign required. The families were people mostly trusting of the police, who after their horrific loss found themselves in a nightmare, fighting the police’s false case and repeated letdowns by the legal system. Derided and denigrated as “animalistic”, they were ultimately driven on by the power of human love and loyalty, and the bonds of family.

The lessons for British policing from this needless devastation of so many lives stretch far beyond the failings of one out-of-his-depth officer who took 26 years to fully confess. The police have a difficult, vital job, to keep society safe. However here, where they failed, their use of the word “animals” documented an inability to see a group of citizens even as people.

28 years ... for the first time this anniversary will pass without a HFSG memorial service at Anfield.

"This is a day of special significance for the LFC family; in fact it is a day of significance for the whole of football, but us more so. We will of course mark the occasion as a team, this is important. I know, at the wish of the families, this is the first year where the service does not take place at Anfield but that doesn't mean we won't stop and remember in an appropriate manner.

There is a memorial at Melwood, with the names of the 96 people who lost their lives on 15 April 1989. We, as a team, will pause, show our respect and remember them on this day. For the victims, the families of those who died and the survivors, their story will always be our story. Their memory and the spirit of those who fought for them long after their deaths, will always be a reason for inspiration and hope, as well as sorrow."
