I'm thinking of playing with linux and have a few basic questions, so if anyone knows feel free to reply ;-))))
I'd make the box and install linux from scratch
would like a good gui version
and stay out of the admin /command instructions as much as possible
and i know if i make the box i will need the linux drivers so
how can i tell if a mobo/modem/video card are going to be compatible with linux?
I've looked around the web a bit and found linspire ( the old lindows) but don't know/think that is the way to go
and i have found several linux sites and every time i read something it gets more confusing
figure i could build the box for about $200 with amd chip but where is a site or info on what linux knows about so no problems on install! and would start out with the basic web stuff
and i hear it is darn hard to find a 56k modem for linux too? there is no way that this guy could write a driver !!
so any links or good advice would be appreciated
thanks
i learned the win95 and Internet without any help/ info and i am in no hurry to do it that way again ;-)
we do learn by our mistakes sometimes ;-)
mitch,
There are many sites, try http://www.linux.ie/newusers/ (http://www.linux.ie/newusers/), it includes http://www.linux.ie/newusers/beginners-linux-guide/modem-setup.php (http://www.linux.ie/newusers/beginners-linux-guide/modem-setup.php)
Thanks ETR
i tried the two links and would not load but the web page said "could not connect"
so maybe busy? was not the standard 404 message?
so will try in a bit
I highly encourage anyone that has the time and patience to bring in a 700MB download to run the Knoppix O/S.

Use your burning program to transfer the iso to your media and then Look Out!!
I already hinted around about trying this Linux system a few times but not untill today did i actually insert the CD and let it run.
Are you going to be in for a pleasant surprise.
This system is Extremely attractive and fast. The browser was responsive even more so than IE but a quick look at the ICONS & LAYOUT and you think you're running a MAC!!
This is a real piece of fine architecture intelligently well thought out and conceived. The taskbar is a thing of beauty as well as the fashionable windows/colors (Mac blue) which you can move about with ease.
Navigating is surprisingly interesting as are the full features of a complete operating system. Enough hip hip hooray, here's the link if you can pull this baby in at all. Dial-Up will take 2 days in my estimation as it takes many hours of a day for me on broadband.
If you prefer and it is available near where you live, it will be well worth the 20USD i believe they ask on the CD. You will not be disappointed.
Now i must be back to downloading this jewell again, as you see my version happens to be in German, like this Ansicht, Lesezeichen, Fenster, Hilfe, Dokument <--Now that i can understand lol
The english version (for me) is going to be another thrill!! altogether.
BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD VERSION (Latest greatest)
As an open-source project this is continually improved upon (like it needs anymore?) It comes already equipped with FIREFOX browser of all things.
KNOPPIX
I'll look into it but seems i have hit a problem....
the holy grail of linux...getting a dial up modem to dial and work !!!
that seems to be a major trouble and me being a total newbie! so still doing my homework a bunch !
I always have wanted to "play" with Linux, I've got a box and ready to install Fedora..... its a harder OS than others, but I thought to why not drop myself in the deep end.
If you need any help, I have got a PDF copy of : Linux for Dummies! :D
Its a really good book and I have used it many a times.
:)
Just PM me if you want it
