Hi Friends,
So when I start Ad-Aware (SE Personal), it says my definitions are 16 days old and would I like to check for new ones. So I click Yes, then Connect, but then I get a message that no newer definitions are available. Well, this first happened last week (when defs were 9 days old), but I thought, ok, maybe there just aren't any new updates. But now it's 16 days old, I'm still getting the same message that no newer defs are available, and I'm starting to wonder if there's a problem "somewhere". Today, a couple of times the update started, but aborted at 5%. Now, I'm thinking surely there's a problem, but I don't know where to look for it.
Have there been any reports of problems with updates from Lavasoft? Have there REALLY been no new updates for 16 days? Do the aborts indicate any possible source for a problem? Thanks for any comments
SE1R125 05.10.2006 was released a few hours ago ...
My copy of A-A hangs at 5% also ... so there is some problem with their servers. I'll try again tomorrow.
Got this when I first opened Ad-aware to check for update
and then removed .def file as recommended and hangs also at 5%
and forum is also down and out

Fix one problem, have another. Reported at BBR that Safer Networking's FileAlyser is being detected.

Hayc, dump the Authenticity Checker. Its beta and hasn't been worked on after the roar died down about the false counting & compromised defs.
ditto for me, wondering why there haven't been any new ad-aware updates lately...
got the 16 DAYS NOTICE...
but, i just keep getting "No new updates" after i connect - no hangs etc.
(the LAST time ad-aware went this long without updating, i found out it was because they'd moved to ad-aware SE - i didn't know they'd stopped supporting the version i HAD!)
* anyway, hope it all gets sorted out soon.

Hi Friends,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the helpful info posted. Long story short -- I finally got my defs to download earlier today, with no further problem. Likewise with the scan. :gwave:
I'm rather surprised at the 16-day span between def releases, BUT SO relieved that the problem wasn't worse! Don't know if they'll ever see this, but THANKS to the folks who fixed it :flowers:

Same on this end but seems the update eventually worked itself out enough to add to the Ad-Aware SE reference file database in the program finally.
Will wonders ever cease or should that be confusion?
are you guys able to download via personal webupdate yet, I dont know if my dns cache is still out but i can only download via the pro version and im starting to wonder if its just me?
Chris
Uhmmm well, it is a rather lost cause me thinks, for whatever version, since it :hysterical: continues to act as it is plagued with difficulties (So What's New?)
Well, there has to be some posts pointing to AAW SE for attentions sake i suppose, (Always Negative Of Course)because for the most part it is all but forgotten and history for the better INFORMED and CONCIENTIOUS pc end user these days. Top Security Forums point that out all the time.
Sorry, no need to reference links, simply check all around for yourselves.
Good-Day AVG-Anti-Spyware RULEZ!!! :gwave:

Hi, Chris.
I was able to get the webupdate the other day but as of last night there were still people having problems with that and from the website.
thanks corrine much appreciated, i guess it isnt just me then which is intresting...
Easter / JOSEPH:
thanks for sharing your views.... I see your point about doing your research on other forums first, maybe i should have looked around abit more first before asking but im confused by this:

Assuming what you mean by that, I dont think you have done your research either otherwise you would be aware that I am not a member of "yourselves" anymore!
I am also running AVG and PC Tools spyware doc!
Chris
Then the news is public, eh, Chris? You are now an *independent*! Now I know why the Def File email update notices have been messed up (not sent, sent twice and end up in the spam folder for many people).
lol im sure the current team will get things sorted out soon...
but nah when it comes to the current system situation :wasntme:

Your Welcome. :)
My research as concerns anything Lava is long since been history, including their alternate forum they decided to erect from the ashes of shame.
So that is why i was not aware you apparently have departed from that camp also (Like many before) LoL
Congrats on your new views of PC Security Programs and the new freedoms you must now enjoy. :mitch:
Concerning other forums, i can mention a couple that the good folks right here at
Landzdown also endorse and when have time also frequent at various times i'm certain of.............Wilder's & Spyware Warrior to name 2.
Malware is taken an even bolder approach (as i'm sure you know by now) by entering the rootkit arena whereas they manufacture programs that can drill deep into the windows kernel and modify system signals or hook the API all in an effort to "hide" their malicious intent and subvert the local security on systems. The before mentioned bot detector AAW SE fails miserably (at least for me), in that area as at best it might indicate an intrusion but is incapable of nothing more. Like before, alternative tools are then a required measure to safely remove the offending entries beit files, registry items, permissions modifications etc. Some programs are up to that task and some are lagging but either way new approaches have been introduced (HIPS etc.) to stand off and intercept those possibilities BEFORE they can enter.
That being said, all the best and glad to see you also are a proponant of A LAYERED APPROACH in protecting your own machinery.
As of today (9 Nov.2006) I am also getting the "Errror Downloading" message here in Australia.
I can't help wondering what is going on at LS. The Updates are now so unreliable as to be not worth pursuing anymore ... And when you do manage to get one d/l'd - it invariably seems to have errors such as f/p's imbedded in it. Or it is the same release number with a new date!!!!!
I no longer recommend it to anyone who asks my opinion and haven't done for some while.
Sad really - it used to be one of the few really good companies around - but I fear something has gone off the rails along the way.
Just my opinion ...
i'm having a little trouble with some of the abbreviations and expressions here. (i assume LS = Lavasoft, etc.)
* the gist of all this (i think), is that ADAWARE SE is no longer 1st-rate, and that AVG and PC TOOLS SPYWARE DOCTOR are better...?
Is That Right???
*
i've had no recent AdAware SE troubles, except updates aren't nearly as frequent as they used to be.
* could someone recommend an app or apps to fill the spot, if i stop using adaware....?
i'm using:
SPYBOT (with TeaTimer enabled)
SPYWARE BLASTER
Norton AV / Firewall
(I used to be very happy with bazooka - but there haven't been any updates for over 6 mos. NOT a good sign.)
do AVG and PC TOOLS have free versions? are they intuitive to set up and use? any conflicts with other apps i'm using??
thanx

Yes, LS = Lavasoft - sorry if that was confusing, but many of us (here) refer to it in that "shorthand".
Meanwhile - looking at what you say you rely on for your security - I'd say you were looking pretty good.
I use what I use for security based on my own comfort of "what works for me".
All the proggies you mentioned are OK -
including Ad-Aware SE, provided you can keep up to date with the somewhat convoluted updates (as discussed before) - the choice is yours ...
I just don't recommend Ad-Aware anymore because it is too unreliable in getting updates and it seems to me (these days) to be not much more than a glorified "cookie-finder" - in other words - it is nothing special in terms of security for your personal computer and your "safety" on line.
You mention Norton AV/Firewall - I guess Symantec NIS/NAV 2003 or later ??? You then mention AVG ....
Whatever you do - it is
never recommended to consider running two (2) of any "MAJOR" defence programs ie. Never run two (2) firewalls together or two (2) Antivirus programs together - there is a danger of continual conflict between such programs if they are both trying to monitor system conditions in real time.
Seeing as how our very own special friend, Aaron Hulett is a Microsoft employee, I know he wouldn't/couldn't steer us wrong. Another security friend, Subratam from Kill Spware, recently relocated from India and is also now with Microsoft.
The bottom line? Why not add Windows Defender to your arsenal?
See Getting Started Using Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/support/howto/default.mspx)
Download Link (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en)
Windows Defender Home (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
Windows Defender Antispyare Cycle (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/msft/antispywarecycle.mspx)
One important thing to do in the setup if you are on dialup or your connection is not "always on" is to change the default time for automatic scanning.
(Note: Windows Defender no longer supports Windows 2000 as it is out of mainstream support.)

That makes my three networked boxes very unhappy ... :(
Hi all,
Found a thread at DSLR Security that might provide some insight regarding the recent server and update issues:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17235606~start=20#end
Reference post: LSStoffe
Is there anyone who experiences any problem with download the def file any longer?
Hey Stoffe,
I belive that it is now resolved with the exception of myself however I can only assume as it is only myself that cannot get updates that there is a specific reason for that, maybe you could look into the issue and let me know why....
Chris
Hi Chris
Exactly what info do you want?
Hi again Stoffe,
I appear to be the only person that still cannot download via webupdate in Ad-aware personal, I would suspect that my ip address has been blocked by mistake?
Chris

it might be an isp block, they often happen and unfortuntly for all others on the isp rather than blocking other nasty users ip's they block the entire isp's ip blocks...
Chris
LOL, I was commenting on the "mistake" ...
there is no reason that i am aware of why it would be done for any other reason but a mistake so without getting paranoid im hoping its the multipull isp ip block...
Chris :breakkie:
Its sounds strange for me duo we have the hole C-net. I have hard to believe that they have blocked a hole B or A-net?!
Your ISP might not like multiple ip answer? A nslookup should give your this anwser:
nslookup download.lavasoft.de
Server: 10.0.1.2
Address: 10.0.1.2#53
Non-authoritative answer:
download.lavasoft.de canonical name = dlserver.download.lavasoft.com.

Try to ping them or pick one of them and add /public/wu.dat in your web browser.
And no, have have not block you from the download servers
