Title: ms patch tuesday...well kinda ;-)
Post by: mitch on October 10, 2006, 07:58:49 PM
if you use
i.e. tools/windows /update

well you will gt a eerror saying the page is temp unavailable !!!

i did find this so there is hope for sometime!

QuoteAlso, I wanted to give you a heads up on a delay in our release process.

Due to some network issues experienced on the Microsoft Update platform, the October security updates released today are not yet currently available via:

Microsoft Update
Automatic Updates
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)
Windows Update v6
To be clear, it's a delay due to the networking for these systems: there are no issues with the security updates themselves. Also, this issue doesn't affect customers using Software Update Services (SUS), Windows Update v4 or Office Update.

Those of you affected by this delay who want to deploy the updates immediately can go ahead and download and deploy these updates manually by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security for the list of bulletins released today and then downloading the updates directly from the links in the bulletin.

Technical teams are engaged and have been working around the clock to resolve this problem and we anticipate that updates will be made available via the Microsoft Update platform by end of today October 10th.

We will post an update when the situation has been resolved and the updates are again available via this distribution channel.

Also if you use the auto update feature you just might end up downloading IE 7 !

Microsoft plans to push out Internet Explorer 7 as a 'high priority update' when it ships security patches tomorrow, according to Washingtonpost.com's Security Fix blog. That means anyone who has Windows configured to download and install patches automatically from Redmond will be greeted with IE7 next time they boot up their machines. In related news, it appears IE's worldwide market share actually increased a couple of points since July, despite a number of high profile zero-day attacks this year.

The article notes that the IE7 "containment wall" protected mode will not be available on XP, but only to those who purchase Vista.

A Microsoft spokesperson declined to say whether IE7 would be released tomorrow, saying only that it would be released sometime this month.

My IE jumped up on Tuesday but instead of going to the MS Update site it went to the General IE Updates page which showed all the recent updates that were specific only to IE plus an option to D/L IE7.

Doing a manual visit to MS Updates got me a "No Critical Updates Available" message.

I haven't tried again yet - might wait a few days to let MS get the problem sorted...

Hmmmm ... my Windows Update functioned normally.  There were 5 priority updates for this 2k box, and another optional one (root certificate update).

No peep about IE7.

The MS Security Blog was updated about an hour ago.  The "network issues" have been resolved.  http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/10/10/October-2006-Bulletin-Release.aspx

I don't expect IE7 with this update, but would not be surprised to see it in the November.  I saw on one of the MS public blogs that there is a "final" chat with IE technical experts on Thursday.

my windows update was weird.  i had 3 sets of updates in a row, about 2 days apart.  i didn't check ie to see if it had automatically jumped to v7 or not, not that i use ie very much.

I expect what happened is that you got the updates based on rating.  Because there were so many updates, coupled by the network problem earlier in the day on Patch Tuesday, the Critical updates were delivered first, followed by the lower rated updates.

Critical > Important > Moderate > Low

IE7 hasn't been released in final yet but I expect that it will be very soon.
