Hiya!
For a while, I've had something hijack internet explorer. I don't use IE a lot, but it happens. What happens is that it redirects it to a website on the server amaena.com, which makes a popup: "this is a security hole created by SERWAB virus, download this and that to be safe" or "you computer security is compromised etc." - whether I click OK or CANCEL it redirects me to a number of sites.
They are (note: dk. because they're danish versions of the scam - amaena.com also gives a /dk/ subfolder):
- dk.errorsafe.com
- dk.drivercleaner.com
- dk.winantivirus.com
- winantiviruspro.com
All are very professional looking sites that look as though selling some sort of security product - firewall, antivirus etc. I am not sure this is the same spyware as it advertises different things?? The workings seem the same.
I had PandaAntivirus for a while, and it frequently informed that it found "winfixer.exe" suspicious (I agree) and blocked it - but it happened repeatedly so it must have been able to work around it. I couldn't update Panda without paying so I ditched it - yeah I guess I'm a cheapskate. I don't know if this winfixer.exe is still my problem now.
So. I've always been pretty happy with Norton, and as my dad buys it every year, I grabbed his CD and installed that, but it didn't find anything suspicious. As the browser hijacks were getting exceedingly provoking, I contacted Norton, only to be asked to pay the $70 that others have mentioned, and had to insist that it was really out of my budget - and it is. I have backup CDs if all else fails but they are OLD and I will have to reinstall a lot. Norton Employee/phonemonkey tells me that certain spyware is able to disable security features in their antivirus so that Norton is unable to detect the infection, or so that Norton is disallowed to delete it because it's flagged as a system file. Question: why the... doesn't their online diagnosis scan check my Norton installation for security oopsies like that? He said it probably had keys in my Reg. base that would have to be removed - but of course didn't tell me what to look for, I know how to search and delete in there.
A friend recommended Avast! which to its credit has found a lot that Norton didn't dig up - but my problem persists.
I disabled scripts and active-X in internet explorer, blocked the sites, and set Firefox to be default browser, hoping that this would minimize the problem, but now I find that the spyware just finds your default browser - a.k.a. it now pops up on Firefox as well. Without the scripts disabled in IE, it can turn into a cascade of popup after popup, but luckily I've disabled automatic installing of stuff ;)
Stuff installed: Avast! 4.7, ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm, Ad-Aware. All updated.
I'm concerned that my Warcraft account will be hacked - knowing several people on the server it has happened to now, and would of course be happy if I could use my computer for home banking, and just feel safe when I typed my credit card in somewhere :?
I'm sorry if this is very long, I guess I'm the talkative sort of person!
KrisCrash,
Can you download HijackThis (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe) choose "Save" and navigate to the folder where it´s saved and doubleclick upon it.
This is a complete installer that installs Hijackthis onto your computer to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and makes an entry in the start menu & allows you to have a shortcut on desktop
then Doubleclick the HJT icon on your desktop, hit "Do a system scan and save logfile". Save the logfile and a txt-file will be produced.. Copy that one and paste it here and some one will advise you.

By the way, can you confirm that the WinAntiVirusPro is a scam or not? My friend told me it was, but...?
Edit: Hmm, looks like Symantec Liveupdate is still active though I uninstalled the antivrus half :o
It seems to have spread to my boyfriend´s pc, he´s really gonna kill me now. One of the Warcraft sites I visit must be infected.
KrisCrash,
Quotecan you confirm that the WinAntiVirusPro is a scam or not
see
WinAntiVirusPro
Potentially unwanted application (http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/winantiviruspro.html)
and as for the log some one will advise you on it as soon as.

Yeah, it's beginning to look like a Smitfraud - thank you. I've tried the Smitfraudfix tool mentioned in the Hijack-log department ( http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=11024.0 ) so hopefully that cleans things up :)
I really hope the Immunization in Spybot will keep it off, I often see it find - and block - the same thing twice.
KrisCrash,
Quotehopefully that cleans things up
If not come and let us know and we we help you clean up your PC.
GR@PH;<'S :Hammys pint:
While I appreciate that someone took the time to create a Smitfraud-fix, it didn't make much sense to me WHAT it did - it didn't print a log that said: "I removed this, you should be fine" actually I'm not sure it did anything.
I still have something hijack my browser to the mentioned sites, however I've meticulously put every one of them in my Classified zone and disallowed them to do anything at all. But it still bothers me, here's an example:
I load the Blizzard Launcher, a newsbox (I think with some .html) that can launch World of Warcraft. Then I get prompted if I want to run scripts (I set all scripts to prompt, this is still a paranoia phase) and I don't know if its a script the launcher needs or a script that's trying to popup the bad sites - as I mentioned they can load themselves as long as ... well as long as Windows is open.
Yesterday, HijackThis! was broken and would hardly run, however (yay windows?) rebooting seemed to set it straight, and everything in the log looks right to me (except for some prosearching.com cookie which I killed).''
Want a new hijack log?
Yes, please post a fresh logfile. However, could you rename it to something else please? Rename it from HijackThis.exe, or something like NotHijackThis.exe. I ask this because sometimes malware will hide from HijackThis based on it's filename, so changing the filename will cause it to appear.

The logfile looks fine now...how are things on the computer now?
Looks fine  Just need to set IE down from paranoia-mode (it prompts about everything)
I've learned something about Internet Explorer in the process that may help others too! You can put sites in the Classified Zone - programs like Spybot S&D will automatically add bad sites to that list for you - but this doesnt block them! It merely gives them their own set of security parametres - so head in and set everything to PARANOIA :D
While being infected I havent really noticed any declines in performance but I've got enough horsepower for what I run I guess. I'm partly glad the hack was so obvious with the popups, because I definatly didnt discover when I got it.
Glad to hear everything is fine now :)
