Hi, Ghost.  Your friend has some work cut out for him/herself.  Have the person follow the instructions here:  http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=11024.0 .  After running the SmitfraudFix and will still in safe mode, have him start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following and press "Fix Checked":

Hi, Ghost.  Please send your friend a link to this thread.  There is work to be done on that computer and if it isn't maintained, an infection will come along that will not be able to be fixed by you or any of us remotely.  Rather, it will require an expensive trip to the shop.

1.  AVG needs to be run again, this time following the directions for item D. Scanning and system cleaning with AVG Anti-Spyware in http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=11024.0 .

2.  Sun Java needs to be taken care of.  C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0 is highly vulnerable to the Vundo/Winfixer infection.

3.  Adobe has been updated to Version 8.  It is a "hulk of a download" so there are two options.  Either uninstall prior versions and update to Version 8 or Foxit, which is a much smaller PDF reader.

Unless one of the other members of the team spots something in the HJT log that I'm missing, it seems ok now.  Maybe it would be helpful for your friend to do the updating, etc. while you supervise.  There isn't a better way to learn than to do it yourself. 

Since you'll have the box, you might consider registering him here at LzD.  Then go to the updates forum and subscribe (click notify) to the software on the family computer.  An email will arrive when there is an update and all he has to do is click the link in the email notification to keep the reminders coming. The link will take him to the updated thread and he'll know what software needs to be updated.  Instructions are here:  http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=1935.0 .  Besides, he might find hanging out here is fun.  :)

As you already know, Sun Microsystems released Java SE 6.  I updated the instructions in the blog post above to reflect that change.

Sorry, Ghost.  I must have turned off the "notify" after posting that.  :(

My only recommendation would be to remove Java SE 5 and update to the new Java SE 6.  Then run Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/) which does the following:

* Detects insecure versions of applications installed
* Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
* Assists you in updating your system and applications
* Runs through your browser. No installation or download is required.

Does the computer seem to be running ok now?

he has been to Secunia Software Inspector and all is updated as of this morn and his machine is running just fine except for a printer problem but he will be registering this am and he can explain the problem.
