Title: Re: problem with annoying icon
Post by: dvs1 on December 24, 2006, 04:35:38 PM
Hi guys.

Firstly apologies if I have not posted correctly. I believe I have at this point. I'm a first time user on here so please bear with me.

I'm a naive internet user. I downloaded a program that advised me I needed a download to watch video clips. I did and now I have a trojan on my pc. To the far right of the taskbar a message appears that says (System alert - system has detected viruses..etc)   When I click on the icon (its a flashing icon of a blue circle with a white question mark, and a grey rectangle with a red circle with a white question mark) it diverts me to http://www.anti-vermins.com/?aff=334 -this site then suggests that I purchase the product to remove the nasty. How can I get rid of this?  it sounds almost identical to the problem Zed2006 is having. My anti virus software came up with the following analysis -

23/12/2006 20:22:25   G   1744   Sign of "Win32:Zlob-QT [Trj]" has been found in "C:\DOCUME~1\G\LOCALS~1\Temp\laf32.tmp\[Upack]" file.
23/12/2006 20:22:55   G   1744   Sign of "Win32:Zlob-OO [Trj]" has been found in "C:\DOCUME~1\G\LOCALS~1\Temp\laf34.tmp\[Upack]" file.
23/12/2006 20:22:47   G   1744   Sign of "Win32:Zlob-KB [Trj]" has been found in "C:\DOCUME~1\G\LOCALS~1\Temp\laf33.tmp\[Upack]" file.
19/11/2006 10:40:12   SYSTEM   1736   Sign of "Win32:VB-SH [Trj]" has been found in "C:\Program Files\BitComet\Downloads\Casino.Royale.2006.CAM.XViD-SubAtom\Movie\Casino.Royale.2006.CAM.XViD-SubAtom.zip\password.exe\[UPX]" file.

Now I know the problem is specific to my pc so I have a hijack this log which reads as follows -

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hey dvs1  :)

Welcome to Landzdown forum.

As it is Christmas eve, might be a *bit* for an available expert to review your info.  By the way, excellent first post.

Until then, please review the info below in preparation for clean up instructions.
QuoteSave it in a permanent folder of your choice, such as C:\HJT\. To create this specific folder on your hard drive: Double click the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop, then under the category hard disk drives: double click Local Disk:, then select file-->New --> Folder and name it HJT. Alternatively, you may navigate to the directory of your choice, create a new folder in the same way, and save it there.

Next right-click on the HijackThis! Zip file and 'extract all' to the new folder you just created.

Note: If you already have HijackThis v1.99.1 on your system and it is in a temporary folder, please move it to a permanent one following the same directions as above. If HijackThis is used from a temp folder, it is in danger of being accidentally deleted by clean-up tools, together with the backup files that are nessesary if recovery is needed.

Please can you try at least two if not more of these  On-line scans
Panda (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm)
TrendMicro (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp)
Bit Defender (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php)
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html)
Symantec (http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=AUVCCVGZBZTVOGXFSTZ)
McAfee (http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp)
CommandonDemand (http://www.commandondemand.com/eval/index.cfm)
Computer Associates (http://www3.ca.com/threatinfo/virusinfo/)
CyberTechHelp (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/misc/av.php)
PC Pitstop (http://www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp)
Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/)
Also please use one or both of  these Trojan scanners
a2 (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)
or download and try
TrojanHunter (http://www.misec.net/) (Note Trojan Scanner 30 day Trial)

Then once you have done clear out your cache folder again ie: Run
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/)
(Note in CCleaner: go to >options > advanced > Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours").
then can you delete the copy of HijackThis this and then re-download HijackThis (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe)  choose "Save" and navigate to the folder where it´s saved and doubleclick upon it.
This is a complete installer that installs Hijackthis onto your computer to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and makes an entry in the start menu & allows you to have a shortcut on desktop
then Doubleclick the HJT icon on your desktop, hit "Do a system scan and save logfile". Save the logfile and a txt-file will be produced..

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/

Ahhh ... another Reds fan ...

I use this as my avatar at football forums:

Anyways ...

First, do as GR@PH;<'S suggests.  The CCleaner will remove the items in your temporary files:

C:\DOCUME~1\G\LOCALS~1\Temp

I don't see the telltale sign of Anti-Vermins in your HJT log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AntiVermins] C:\Program Files\AntiVermins\AntiVermins.exe /h

Reboot after you do the above, and post back with a fresh HJT log.

Please confirm that this what you are seeing:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic69886.html

Hi guys.

I have been unable to respond recently due to a personal matter. I appreciate your help and your patience.

I followed everyones instructions. I scanned my pc with 3-4 of the online scanners I was advised to use. (when I tried to use panda software scanner-my anti virus software said the download had a trojan)

McAfee found -

C:\Documents and Settings\G\Desktop\smitRem.exe PrcViewer
C:\Program Files\...\Quarantine\xytr.dat FakeAlert-G

symantec found nothing

BitDefender found -

BitDefender Online Scanner

Sorry guys. it appears a miracle has occured.

I rebooted my pc as per winchester73's advice. When I did that the annoying icon was gone. I can't believe it.

Being cynical I'm still waiting for it to jump out of the shadows and attack my pc again, but it appears to have gone at this point.

I'd like to thank everyone for thier help, it's much appreciated. However, I will wait for a response as I am NOT qualified to talk about whether or not it has been removed properly, but so far so good.

regards.

Having re-read Winchester73's last post to me I am posting the HJT log - post reboot-again apologies (clearly I'm getting over excited)

Title: Re: problem with annoying icon
Post by: dvs1 on January 09, 2007, 01:02:39 PM
Hello guys.

Just one last thing. I would really appreciate any advice on how to protect my pc so this doesn't happen again. I downloaded spyware blaster and spyware guard. What else can I do to have adequate protection. I am using a couple of free programs on my pc. Which are the best? I am still learning ( and doing do slowly ),so I would appreciate any advice.

Regards.

dvs1,
The following is malware and can be cleaned form your PC
Can you make sure that you have set your PC to show all files (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html#5).

Now close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  put a tick (check) against each of the following,

making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O21 - SSODL: buprestidae - {b59f3ba4-98da-4b5f-8a2d-7b56fb11140b} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cthkpcv.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot (ie: Re-start your PC) into Safe Mode (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,6156-1377929,00.html#4) .
Then using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cthkpcv.dll (file missing)
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please download Pocket Killbox (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/spyware/KillBox.zip) and unzip it and save it to say your Desktop.
(NOTE : Pocket KillBox is a program that can be used to get rid of files that stubbornly refuse to allow you to delete them.)

Run it, and put a Tick (Check) next to the text that says Delete on reboot
For each of the files you could not deletecopy & paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Also please see Fake Security Programs - VirusBurst, SpyAxe, and other "SmitFraud" Infectons (http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=11024.0)
And follow the instructions there.

Now Reboot (ie: Re-start your PC) then please  do a new HijackThis log and post it here.

Hi GR@PH;<'S

Firstly thank you for your help.

I carried out your instructions.Starting HJT,I removed 021.. On Killbox I only had one file path to remove,as instructed by yourself, so I entered yes for rebooting.
The exact message I got afterwards was..The pending filename operations registry data has been removed by an external process. It didn't reboot my pc for me, I did that. Not sure what all that means.

The HJT log I ran afterwards reads as follows..

dvs1,
I recommend that you now wait for one of the others to come let you know more but while you wait you can go to your Add/Remove programs and remove the Java that you have IE: java 1.4
Then go and download the latest version IE: Java SE Downloads v1.6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).

Are you still having some problems?

Hi winchester73.

I'm not sure yet. I was about to reply to my last response from GR@PH;<'S. Firstly I removed the java 1.4 as instructed, I followed the link to their website and there was absolutely no reference to Java SE Downloads v1.6.

I'm worried because GR@PH;<'S has asked me to remove the program, and also that he has asked someone else to respond to me. I'm wondering if there is a bigger problem lurking that I didn't realise. Also I didn't get a response to the previous post specifically, i've just been asked to remove a program without a reason. I'm a bit confused really.

i do appreciate the help, i'm just at a very basic level with all this and need to be spoonfed. What i'm really saying is I need clarification, in lamens terms.

dvs1,
QuoteI followed the link to their website and there was absolutely no reference to Java SE Downloads v1.6.
Scroll down the page you will see Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 click the Download button
On the next page you must except the agreement then tick witch one you want IE:
  Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  jre-6-windows-i586.exe 12.56 MB
  Windows Online Installation, Multi-language  jre-6-windows-i586-iftw.exe 361.63 KB

(I Personally use offline Installation )

Hello all.

i installed it. I then had Spyware guard tell me that my browser settings were getting hijacked. It described the danger as a BHO. It removed it though fortunately.

So..to anyone who has viewed my posts...does it look like I have anything else to worry about?
Title: Re: problem with annoying icon
Post by: winchester73 on January 12, 2007, 12:34:18 AM
GR@PH;<'S was just alerting you to the fact that your Java was out of date.  There are some nasties that exploit situations where an outdated Java is being run.

What exactlly did SpywareGuard alert you to?  Do you remember the warning?  What site was the hijacking diverted to?

Otherwise, there isn't much in that HJT log to be alarmed about.  How about you reboot and post a fresh HJT log.

Hi winchester73.

Thanks for filling me in on that.

I've had to create a new profile. I changed my email address to the wrong one by mistake, so it closed my account a sent an activation email...to that address!!

needless to say I will be trying to rectify that later.

Not sure which website it being diverted to. I have report from Spyware Guard tho.

NEW BHO DETECTION ALERT
On 23:05:19 01/11/2007 a new BHO installation attempt was detected

You'll need to allow that BHO change in SpywareGuard ... that CSLID reported is valid and related to the Java update:  http://www.castlecops.com/tk26190-SSVHelper_Class.html

Otherwise, how is your computer?  It should be back to normal.

Other than the recent Arsenal game ... well, never mind.   :(

trust me mate, the saga at LFC isn't the biggest thing going on for me right now.

Moving on though, my computer seems to be ok. I'm just checking in with you guys to make sure it's ok. It is running a little bit slowly for my liking however. I changed things so loads of applications don't run on startup, defragmented it etc, no joy though. It's still quite pedestrian.

i am glad I / we got rid of that irritating icon though.

There's a poll at Guardian Unlimited about Rafa's future ... be sure to vote.

Check to be certain you don't have similar things running simulataneously ... you have quite a mix of antivirus, antispyware, antitrojan, etc ... more than one real time monitor can slow things down.

Is this last HJT log before or after you tinkered with what is running?

BTW, see if you can log in under your old username now ... I tinkered with the control panel.  I either screwed things up, or fixed it.

When you say your computer is 'slow', do you mean all the time or just doing certain things?

Your original problem seems to be resolved looking over that HJT log.

QuoteI'm also wondering how come your so into footie?

I coach and referee ...  :D

Hello Winchester73 / GR@PH;<'S

Firstly to respond to Winchester, i've noticed it's slow primarily when I'm browsing. Although if It can be slow sometimes when i've clicked on microsoft word for example. When I click on the applications i use most it's almost like I can hear the process running in the background, but it takes a little while for it to appear. I'm sure it can't be that bad tho. I'm probably comparing it to the speed it had when I first got it. I have stopped a few programs loading on startup, cancelled real time protection on a couple of the anti-spyware programs it has made a slight difference.

Nice one one the coaching BTW. Good luck with the refereeing

GR@PH;<'S...what is degraged?? I have absolutely no idea i'm afraid.

I think GR@PH;<'S  means defragment your hard drive, but I think you have already done that.

I'm thinking your computer is running slow because there is a known flaw in IE7.

Do you have the Phishing Filter enabled? When you visit some websites in Internet Explorer 7, the filter can slow down your PC by hogging the CPU.

"This problem occurs when one or more of the following conditions are true:

• The Web page contains many frames.
• You browse many frames in a short time.

Internet Explorer 7 evaluates the whole Web page when you browse a frame. Therefore, CPU usage may be very high."

There is an update that Microsoft has released for this issue. However, because this is not a security issue, it must be manually downloaded. It is available from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928089
