Title: quick Q on installing IE7
Post by: Brynn on December 29, 2006, 05:47:38 PM
Hi Folks
Happy Holidays!
I've been putting off downloading and installing IE 7, partly because I wanted to install some more RAM.  And partly to allow time for any initial glitches (which sometimes accompany new updates) to get worked out.  So I guess I'm about ready now, but I was reading babyoh's thread (http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=12595.0) about difficulties installing it, and it brought up a question for me.

In one reply, Corrine referenced her blog entry (My IE7 Experience (http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2006/11/my-ie7-experience.html)).  And I also read all the other informative links provided.  Most if not all of them recommended disabling security programs before installing.  But I'm not sure how that's going to work??  I mean, I do know how to disable my various security programs.  It's just that when I normally get my Windows updates, there are no options for downloading and installing separately.  The button says 'download and install updates', and as soon as the download completes, installation begins automatically.  Is there some way to stop the process after the download but before the installation, and then to resume it later?  Or else, how can I get offline and disable the security, before the automatic installation begins?

Thanks for your help  :D

I found it best to download the file rather than use the update.

Brynn,
You will wonder why you waited so long you will  IE if only for the Tabs that it has,
I personally have not had any problems in using it.

Brynn, depending on your settings, by the time Microsoft prompts you to INSTALL IE7, it has already been downloaded to your computer.  For me on dialup, it took 3 weeks between the time I was asked for permission to download to when I was prompted to install.

When I got the install prompt, I disconnected from the 'net, did my backups, shut down the firewall, A/V and other security software.

MikeW's suggestion is a good one since you can control what happens.

Oh, ok then.  I'll use the link Mike provided.

FYI, I have Windows set to alert me when updates are available, and then I go and get them manually.  I like 1st, knowing when things are downloading.  I'm on dialup too, so downloads do cause a slow-down, and sudden, unexpected slow-downs can be unsettling.  Plus, I also like that I can choose what and when to download and install.  But I've never been presented with a separate choice of when to install.  Installation is automatic, as soon as the dl is complete.

Everyone certainly seems to love the tabbed browsing.  I don't quite understand what's wrong with having several browser windows open, and switching between windows.  It seems like about the same thing to me, ultimately.  But I guess I will find out soon enough  :mitch:

Thanks for everyone's comments  :D

Hey Brynn  :)
More RAM eh? (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi152%2Fripley2006%2Fhyper.gif&hash=a6b080a31deaba729ec242897762a7dfc1146862) You go girl!!!

What's the bother about tabbed browsing, you ask?  Well, Brynn, I had found this *group* I now know I needed to join...TA  (TA=Tabs Anonymous)
I'll share what I said at one of my groups:

Hello, my name is Ripley, and I'm a Tab-aholic

<Hi Ripley> the group says in unison.

It's very nice to be here with you all tonight.  I had read enough to know that I was probably becoming complacent in so many years of non-tabbed browsing, but I never realized that trying a new browser would bring on "issues."

It started very innocently...naively, I guess, now that I look back.  I was always tempted, but never had the time, and wanted to stay in my safe zone, with what control I already had with my familiar, non-tabbed browswer...safely configured for whatever the net could dish out, or so I thought.

But then I was always observing SO MANY of my friends "using"...a tabbed browser...

So one day I thought maybe I can handle whatever "issues" come from switching to a new browser...
...and just let me say, in MY case, the "issues" came on fast & furious!

It truly all became clear when I went to do my online shopping...what an absolute...could take a whole thread to explain my euphoria w/ tabbed browsing...experience, ESPECIALLY on a slow dial-up...

I have no experience with IE7 yet, but I expect that you will be posting soon that you are "using" tabbed browsing, and my caution would be...watch out!  It's addictive!
