Hi Everyone!!
I need some advice on fixing Mum's computer (long distance help) She's over in NZ I'm in Oz....
Its brand new, bought at Xmas, Acer, runs XP, 256 and 80G hardrive I think it all was.
Its running terribly slow she said, even opening Outlook express is a nightmare for her which tells me its not the internet but her puta. She said her Trade Me page (like our ebay) is fine.
I've had her doing every scan I can think of and am convinced there are no viruses or trojans. I wouldn't expect any as she doesn't do too much on it anyway. She had Avast anti virus on and I got her to put on the new free version thats powered by Kaspersky thats out. She also has AVG anti spyware 7.5. We've done the ATF cleaner and she also runs adaware and cc cleaner. Any idea's would be great....
Ooops made a mistake, her computer is only 68BG and she has it half full already.
just an idea
if so far everything shows good on the anti-crapwere
what does she has that has taken so much space??? videos mp3's?
don't know the specks on the computer but i know that 256meg is a bit on the light side of memory !
i suggest 512 for a min !
how many programs does she have running?
check it out before you have her do it
but
a bill gates salute (ctl/alt/del)
and then look at that window and see what she has running in "applications" and then one tab will show a graph of cpu usage and memory and "PF" how does that look ?
that will show how the memory is doing.. remember when she runs low on memory she will start using the hard drive as memory and that slows things down a bunch !
and remember only 1 av per customer ;-D
you only want to have one anti virus program running or they fight with each other !
and on the avg anti-spyware it is a free trial with ALL features and that is active monitoring and that can slow things a bit too?
i have that part disabled and just use it as a scanner.
is she running microsoft defender? ( that sucks the life out of my old xp system)
i have my xp set up in classic mode ( faster)
and i disabled "indexing" and that helps too
might look on my page in my signature and look at SOME of the xp settings?
now it would be nice to see a HJT log?
do you kinow how to talk her through it ?
here is a link, just make sure to tell her DO NOT LET IT FIX ANYTHING !
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html
and if that doesn't work plan B
QuoteHiJack This HJT is a very powerfull program, but not for a newbie ! Most support sites will ask to see a HJT log and that can be a problem for a newbie, so i have two ways to do it
NEWBIE WAY
a.Download HijackThis© Merijn from: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe
b.At the download prompt, choose "Save". After the download is complete, navigate to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder and double-click it to complete the installation.
c.Double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop. Choose "Do a system scan and save logfile". The log will open in Notepad and you can copy/paste it in a topic at the forum you use.
d. If you do it the above way you will not get into trouble, if you try the "OLDIE WAY" you can just install it in a temp file and will not be able to recover anything you remove ! and a big "thanks" to "the Gun" for the above info.
Thanks heaps for that, and for being so quick to respond!! I will work her through doing the HJT log. Good idea about the AVG, I will get her to stop the working in the background. I'll also ask her about the cpu, I'll ring her and work her through it.
CPU is 18% and PF is 534MB
ya i think she is light on memory first of all
my thinking
she has 256 meg
she has a on board video card so sharing 32 to 64 meg of memory
so now she is at only 200 meg which is real light !!!
and did you ask what she has in all the disk space?
ccleaner should have gotten rid of all the easy stuff ( temps and such )
but wonder what she is saving in the rest?
i have 1 gig on my xp system ( memory is pretty cheap)
and i don't even use a PF on the disk
so that is why i am hinting no matter what more memory should bring life to it !
Here is Mum's Hijack log file....
got Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Cherubs,
As I noticed that you are ruining HijackThis from your Desktop not from its own folder.
Can you please download HijackThis (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe) choose "Save" and navigate to the folder where it“s saved and double click upon it.
This is a complete installer that installs Hijackthis onto your computer to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and makes an entry in the start menu & allows you to have a shortcut on desktop
then Double click the HJT icon on your desktop, hit "Do a system scan and save log file". Save the log file and a txt-file will be produced.. Copy that one and paste it here.
before you scan can you make sure that you have all the latest security updates from Microsoft for your OS.
as I see you are running IE6 witch has been replaced by IE7 as it is more secure.
Also your PC may respond quicker after a defragment of the harddrive (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848).
GR@PH;<'S :Hammys pint:
you could get your mum to fix this with HjT, also nothing jumps out a me in that logfile.
Looks clean to me also ..
Open HijackThis, and scan with it. Check the box next to this
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
Click 'Fix Checked'.
you might also want to get your mum to do this on line scan
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
Tell her to select Full Service Scan, it will scan for malware/viruses
it will also clean out junk file's that are no longer needed, and will recomend,
if a Defrag of her hard drive is needed..
numbnuts..
I'd agree with mitch though, 256 is too little. By the time Windows has loaded, you probably would be lucky to get even 200MB left.
You can get rid of these three in HijackThis, in addition to what numbnuts listed above:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
Although it isn't going to help much, it will give a tiny bit more memory free.
Thanks everyone, its very hard helping her long distance LOL!!!!
Cherubs, now you know how we feel.
