Title: HELP! Cannot Connect to The Internet-Supposed Winsock provider catalog Error
Post by: Laz on July 09, 2007, 11:42:29 PM
Hello everybody, I'm new here (but not to PC's, and this has got me puzzled), and I can't connect to the 'net. I've tried resetting the Winsock catalog, both manually and with XP Net Diagnostics, restarted every time and still no connection. I also reset the TCP/IP Stack and yet again, no connection. I'm hoping someone here can help 'cause this has got me frustrated as it is my main PC. Here is a HijackThis Log, which could also help:

By the way, I'm running Windows XP Home as mentioned up there, and have a router (which works and is giving connection to the PC i'm writing on) that can "sense" the card from the PC that gets no connection. Thanks in advance.
Title: Kinda Fixed

Well, it seems that I have located the problem...and it was something I wouldn't have expected....my firewall...as it had been limiting some svchost.exe connections. BUT..the problem still persists..albeit with some other "program" (calls itself n/a), which Outpost doesnt let it go through. I'm still looking for info on what to do, so if anyone can help..please do. Thanx

Have you tried disabling Outpost? Even go as far as uninstalling it entirely? If it was blocking svchost.exe connections, it may have been blocking a lot of others aswell. Your first step should be uninstalling Outpost entirely and seeing if the problem is resolved.

Is this wireless, or a normal wired connection?
Title: Way Ahead...Even though I despise doing all of it...

Well, let me start at where I was when I posted that last message: I had already checked the connection with OP disabled for a few minutes...well, it worked fine, then i tried enabling and tweaking a few things, all to no avail. After I posted the message, I did a complete uninstall (reg entries and all :D), and scanned my PC with all the scanners I have (2 Spyware, 2 Virus, 1 Trojan, and a few reg cleaners), then did a complete install of OP..and would you believe it!, it still blocked the connection. I then officially called it quits, backed up everything I had done after my "perfect" backup (everything worked great) on my other HDD and then restored that backup, and this is where I am now, everything running smoothly again. I still have no idea what made OP do that rogue kill connection thing...but I just hope I'm better prepared the next time or that it doesnt do it at all.

P.S. Oh, and since you asked, it is a wired connection.

Wow! Certainly well ahead.

Well, at least it's sorted! Sorry we couldn't offer any solution, but please do stick around and don't hesitate to come back if there is any other problems :)

Well, thanks for your hospitality SpyDie. This seems to be a very helpful forum, and I sure will stick around, try to help others and ask for help if/when i need it. And anyways, it was probably some program that messed with outpost or something went bad (corrupted maybe?), but either way, i sure hope it doesn't happen again.
