I have a computer that had many bugs and was loaded to the point of freezing. It had 180 solutions, Alexa, BargainBuddy, CWS, DyFuCa, istbar, SahAgent, TopMoxie, VX2 among others. I got them all off (I think?) with mostly AdAware106 and AVG but also a number of others and special tools for some of them. It is finally scanning great with AA & AVG and behaving wonderful. :D
Cleanup, flush & restart System restore, all done.
I added some JPG images that I've had for a long time on my "old reliable", cleanest machine that I know.
I went to Control Panel>Display Properties and set the desktop to a nice one. It was working fine then.
I updated Windows.
I installed a swimming fish screen saver program that I also have had for a long time on my "old reliable", clean machine for a long time with no trouble. It asked about setting it as the screen saver. I said Ok.
When I was done, I went to Control Panel>Display Properties to tweek it's properties.
The Display Properties box is all messed up. There are no tabs for desktop or screen saver or any tabs at all.
There is only a box for setting the THEME. The rest is gone. :uhm: ?????
I see that when I open up Control Panel>Display Properties, rundll32.exe shows as starting in task manager. Hmmmmmm
OK, I copied my (works fine) rundll32.exe from old reliable to the wierd computer. (Both are XPs)
No help. :(
I uninstalled the Fish Screen Saver. No help. :(
What's going on ? Does anyone have any ideas of what to try ?
Is there a better or more direct way to get a clean copy of the display property function back ?
What could do that ?
Is there still a bug in there ?
Help
I'll include HJT & AA logs. Can someone else see something in them. It had a lot of junk on it so I shouldn't be surprised if something or part of something was still there.
Please let me know if you you even see some so-called "grey zone" or "personal choice" type items. I am opposed to Viewpoint, weatherbug, and all of those other programs that some antivirus programs are choosing to not include even though they know better.
I shall try to include a screen shot of what it looks like..... Wierd, huh?
Insert doesn't seem to work but it is attached at the very end so you can see what it looks like.

Blue55 :)
That error is caused by "smitfraud" and/or "qoolocic".
I want you to try this:
Download the luna style here:
http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/luna.zip
Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder , to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!
When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.
If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle.
Die Hard :)
Blue55 :)
Disregard my previous post. You do not miss the XP theme, which this fix cures.
I´ll try to find the proper fix for you.
You could try this for me though.
Click (windowskey+R) and type Desk.cpl>OK and see if the same comes up.
Die Hard :)
It turns out that I did have a system restore point that I could use and it fixed it but ruined hours of tweeking that I had just done, Sigh.
I tried installing it again using system restore religiously and testing before and after.
The screen saver is causing the problem....somewhow. I tried it 3 times. It works great on other computers...really.
It refuses to be nice on this computer.
I'll have to be more careful with the system restore but I hate weeding through long lists of bugs found in system restore while I'm trying to clean a computer. Oh, well.
Thanks for the thoughts. :?
Blue55
Just want to pass along a practice i use regularly that may help. I completely FLUSH "ALL" restore points weekly and after a reboot, Create a new one, then let windows take it from there.
I dunno if i understood your issue entirely as Die Hard very well did, but i also do a lot of tweaking and sometimes add programs i am not 100% confident in just yet, so i make sure i create a new point for System Restore, then install the app. If for some reason the app interferes with normal operation you can Uninstall what will remove and Restore your PC at the point before it began to misbehave.
