Title: What's Your Favorite AV?
Post by: Skittles on September 27, 2005, 07:04:42 PM
I have always used AVG, and usually put AVG on those whom I help, as well.

But I was thinking about switching to Avast.  But I also heard that some think that Avast is a resource hog.  Some had mentioned switching over to Avast because AVG was missing so many things lately.

Any thoughts or likes or dislikes and why?

skittlespc,
I am sure that some of the others will come let you know about  Avast but I used to use AVG but now use Norton but I do find that it can be a drain on resources.

You use Norton?  Are you NUTS?  lol  :tease:  lol

I didn't think any computer expert/guru/nut used Norton.  lol  major resource hog!  Usually when ppl have Norton, even if it is a new computer I know me and several others uninstall it right away...first thing.  lol

Same here. Having an infected computer with 128 or even 256 Mb of RAM to run with Norton AND an infection is almost impossible.
The last system I cleaned, I had to manually empty the "\user\temp"-folder from 17000 Norton logs.

128 MB of RAM? Are you sure it was a computer and not a coffe maker or a fire detector? :moreevil:

Norton is like having a 1200 ccm Kawasaki motorcycle. It's no toy for the weak to play around with.
If you try to get it into the trunk (boot) of your Volkswagen, don't be surprised if it's to large for your resources.
Threat it well and it serves you without any grunts.

Personal favourite, and the favourite of many professionals, is Kaspersky AntiVirus.

A close second for me is NOD32.  :tease:

That would be KERIO, my dear Easter, nutcase!  hehehe  :tease:

At least I haven't heard about AVG going down under.

Then that would be my misinterpretation of the program that was and then wasn't, or is that was and will not, or could it be that it's not but was when it wasn't then wasn't anymore.  :tease: :| :uhm:

I have used McAfee on all of my personal machines for many years. At work, I am a Network Administrator and I have tried F-Secure, Norton, Kerio, AVG and a few others. But I really like McAfee Security Suite.

I also, do not like Norton. When I repair machines, I have discovered a lot of B L O A T and the machines just don't work all that well. The live update is...well, a little dead!

McAfee works very well and has a lot to offer for a small cost.   :breakkie:

Only just saw this topic!

I have never used Kaspersky but have seen very very good reviews on it.

I've had NOD32 for a while now, probably about 3-4 years. Also tried Avast & AVG. NOD32 is the best IMO if you are willing to pay, if going for free then Avast.

It's Avast for me.  Great scanner, and having good Czech blood flowing in my veins, it's fun to use a Czech program...w/ good Czech blood flowing in the computer code.

PLUS!  How many A/V's send you a Christmas card?
The little blue screen that floats up from the bottom of your screen and tells you, "Virus database has been updated..." was a little red box the other day and it said "Seasons Greetings from Alwil Softeware" or something like that.

You could just as well try AVG, since it´s also czech. But on the other hand, it didn´t send you Christmas greetings  :tease:

AVG is also czech?  Did not know that.  Well, I'm impressed that the my "homeland" people are so security conscious that they have produced and maintain 2 of the most popular free A/V's that many of us are using.  There must be a pocket of dandy programmers back there in the Czech Republic.

And Die Hard, I bet AVG sent you Christmas greetings, but you just didn't notice.  Might want to check your logs.   :tease:

Ah, AVG/Grisoft is out of Brno, Czech Republic.
Actually, my cesky (czech language) not so good.
I do know Vitame Vas! (translated: We welcome you!)  :)
Maybe if we add that to the LzD forum banner some of those crackerjack czech techies will join our forum.
You know, if you build it...they will come.  Who knows, maybe they are already here, and I don't know it.   :tease:

Going on, let's see now, about 3 years for me with AVG!

With KERIO personal firewall and AVG, have not had so much as one single serious issue, great combo for me and XP Pro!

AVG updates simply won't quit, they update that AV proggy like there is no tomorrow, you gotta love it.

KERIO is simply amazing for me also. No incompatibility system issues either like i used to suffer from with other firewalls. Both are mainstays on my system.
