Title: Issues with Vista and the DHCP service
Post by: Geowil on February 17, 2009, 11:09:17 PM
Need some help with a slightly hair-ripping problem that I am having on a laptop.

Recently (just last week) a laptop has stopped pulling an ip address.  I have been unable to get it to start working again.

Here is what happens:

After logging in if I go to the Network and Sharing Center, the mini-network map at the top shows that my computer is attempting to connect to the network.  It sits there and the status says Identifying.

When I try to renew the ip address I get an error message saying that the RPC Server is not found.

I googled this error and found that when dhcp is disabled windows trys to use an rpc server.

Checked my services and sure enough dhcp was not running.

So I attempted to run it only to get shot down with this error message:

Quote
Windows could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer.

Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process.

I googled some more and found a possible fix that said to go to the registry editor and find the HKEY for the dhcp service, right click it and make sure that the account had the proper permissions.  Which I did check and set to full access.  There was an Unknown Account listed in the permissions, I took away its full access/read privileges to the process.

Trouble Shooting Tried:

I have tried renewing the ip address from the cli.

I have tried to repair the connection from the NSC.

I have tried starting the dhcp service from the cli, and also I have tried resetting the WinSock from the cli.  This allowed my wireless connection to pick up networks again and also got the Side Bar working again (not entirely sure these were related to the reset, but they began to work after I did this.)

I also tried stopping and restarting the following services:

NSI
AFD
TDX

Nothing has worked so far.

Statically setting the ip address is, at the moment, not an option.

reformatting the computer is also not an option unless extremely necessary.

Anyone have any ideas?

The computer is using Windows Vista Home Premium and has SP1 installed.  It also has norton A/V installed.  The windows firewall is turned off and the nic is still functioning (able to ping the loop back).

OTHER INFO:

in the dev manager, there is an oddity.  Under network adapters there is a Microsoft 6TO4 #4 and #5 listed.  Both of these claim to be having driver issues.

There is also a Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #4 that is displaying the same warning.

There are 3 Vista Admin level accounts on this computer, and the guest account.

Am unable to login into the full admin account using the cli hack, the admin account doesn't show at the login screen.

if you need any other info, let me know.

Try a system restore to a point where things were working?

nope, I got it.  It was a combination of two things that got it fixed.

First we had to reset the WinSock then somehow the Log On settings for the DHCP service had been changed.  switch it back to Local Service with no password and the computer picked up an ip almost instantly.

also sys restore was turned off.

A word to the wise:  Even a bad System Restore point is better than none at all.  :rose:
