Title: Scrabble?
Post by: Brynn on November 28, 2005, 02:25:49 PM
Hello Everyone,
Ever since noticing the Tables feature, here in the editor, I've been thinking about setting up a Scrabble board with it -- wondering first, if it would be permissable by the admins?  It would take a lot of what I think is called....what's it called?...AH! Bandwidth!  I don't clearly understand what it is, I just know that messages with either a large amount of text, and/or graphics, take a lot of resources such as bandwidth to load/display (?) time and again, every time a msg is viewed or replied to.  (At least, that's my understanding.)  And that's what happens when playing the "version" of "Scrabble" that I'm familiar with.  Judging by the huge scan logs which are posted, I would guess LzD has enough of what it takes, to do this.  I just would want permission before trying to start a game.

In addition to wondering if the admins would permit it, I've been wonderieng whether other members might be interested in playing.  It takes a minimum of 4, maybe 3 players, for a decent (interesting) game.  And over 6, or maybe 7 players, it goes too slow to be interesting.  But, if more want to play, they could join the next game.  With games running more or less back to back (one after another), players can rotate in and out, as one game ends and another begins.

I guess it's an acquired taste, this game.  In some ways, it's just outrageous!  Serious Scrabble players would hardly recognize this game, in some ways.  Yet in other ways, it really does require skill and finesse with the English language.

So anyway, it seems to me some LzD members might enjoy this type of game.  But also, I'm still fairly new here -- it still says "Newbie" by my name when I post!  So maybe I haven't gotten an accurate "read" on other members yet.  In any case, I thought I'd go ahead and post the idea, and just find out if there might be any interest...as well as whether it would be permissable.  If so, I'll go ahead and post more of a description of how it's played.

I believe the change in your status from Newbie comes after a certain amount of posts.

And btw....  :welcome2:  I don't believe we have met.  I think you came when I was in transition of moving from USA to Sweden.

Well, speaking of ranks, playing games would be an easy way to move up among them, wouldn't it?  Ha, I just thought of that...for whatever it's worth!

Ok then, I will build the playing board pretty soon!  The game is basically like the regular Scrabble game, except that there's no choosing of tiles, letters.  One makes up the highest scoring word that will fit with words already played.  Except that the two 10-point letters, Q and Z, can only be used once.  So once someone plays a word with Q or Z, no one else can play a word with them.  But otherwise, letters can be used without limit, and words can be any length.  It's scored just like the regular Scrabble, except without the limits imposed by the real game, the scores can get quite huge!

I need to do some work over the next few days, but then I'll make the board and start the game....maybe next weekend.  Ok then, cool!
