Title: Ad-Aware SE plus hangs when scanning registry
Post by: D-Kleiser on December 18, 2005, 05:10:57 PM
I'm running Windows XP Home edition SP2 on a homebuilt PC.
Ad-Aware SE plus build 1.06r1 hangs when scanning the registry.
I've set Ad-Aware to scan only the registry, and shut down Norton
Antivirus and Windows Firewall, and all open programs before scanning.
Quick scan and deep scan both hang. I'll appreciate any help.  ...........Thanks

you are current on the latest definition files? (above the start button "check for updates"

have you tried a scan in SAFE mode?

you could still have a running process that is stopping it and might work in SAFE mode?

here is info in case you are a bit rusty on how to do safe mode ;-)

Hi, D-Kleiser.  Welcome to LzD Forum.

Thank you for posting  your problem here.  It reminded me that I hadn't added the Ad-Aware Freezing/Hanging Help (http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=425.new#new) instructions here at LzD Forum.  Mitch's suggestions would be a good way to start.  Then, please see the newly-posted instructions.  Please let us know how you make out.

Thanks.

I've been able to complete an Ad-Aware SE scan by proceeding in steps. I rebooted into safe mode, and scanned with custom settings. I de-selected everything but deep scan registry, then removed critical objects. Then I selected all folders on the C: drive. This scan froze on the System Volume Information folder, which seems to be hidden in Windows Explorer. This seems to be the restore points in System Restore. Turning off this service and rebooting erased all restore points, and the service was restarted after rebooting. Afterwards Ad-Aware SE scan was able to get through all folders on the C: drive. Ad-Aware SE still froze on the conditional scan, and no log was written. I restarted Ad-Aware SE and scanned again, cancelling the scan before conditional scan started. This allowed removal of all critical objects found before cancelling. Aterwards a full system scan was able to complete.

Wow, D-Kleiser.  That was persistence.  The only thing that concerns me is that you cleared System Restore so early in the game.  By doing that, you had no restore point to return to, yet still had infections on your PC.  If you are sure your system is clean, create a new restore point.  We would, of course, be happy to review a logfile for you.

Happy New Year.
