Title: setting up a limited user account
Post by: Brynn on January 07, 2006, 04:02:25 AM
Hi Friends,
I've been working on setting up a new limited user account in Windows, to use for better safety on the internet.  And I have some questions which I haven't found answers to, in the several support articles I'm using for help.  So I'm bringing them here to the experts!  :)

Can I use the same email addresses that I use in the admin account?
Will I need to run all the security scans in the limited account that I now run in the admin account?
Will I have to re-register at all my...registered websites and forums?

So far, it's been a lot more work that I expected, to set it up.  I was surprised to be starting from scratch in the new account.  I thought it would use the same display theme that I use in the admin account, and I thought I'd have the same desktop.  Although it was fun to set up the new display theme!  It's interesting there are quite a few subtle differences between the two account types, beyond what I can control.  For example, some of the desktop icons are different.  I know that there are certain things I won't be able to do in the limited account, so that's probably behind a lot of the little differences I've noticed.  But I wouldn't think it would result in different icons.

Anyway, thanks!
Take care :)

it does take time to get a limited account set up but i think the security is worth it !
and you can export your favorites firefox bookmarks and OE settings to a floppy and use them for setting up user by importing the info !

consider it a new computer and you have limited control over things
IE and OE will have to be set up as if it was a new computer, sorry !

most security scans in the other user accounts ;-))))

don't need to register as a new user, but allow the cookies you do now !
i do as much as i can as user online and it does take time
remember if you right click a program that won't let you run and you can select to run it as admin ! ( i have a few like that)

what icons are different?

now here is another trick now that you have two users on your computer

set up a new admin account ( i call mine GHOST)
the only time i use ghost is when i have a trouble somewhere... admin could be corrupt, you could have user messed up so ghost will allow you one last chance to try and fix things ;-)

and remember to burn a password recovery disk for all accounts !!!! ( i have instructions on my site
go to the home page and look in xp password recovery disk or...............................
If you haven't done this yet, do it now ! if not it can be done with $ or cracker software, but this way is safe and free and easy

To Make the Disk
go to start
control panel
user accounts
click on the account you want to make the disk for
on the next screen in the upper right click "prevent a forgotten password" that will start a wizzard, and you put in a floppy disk
Now Store it in a safe place!

to use the disk
click the user name
click the green arrow button
that cause a "did you forget your password"

click to use your floppy disk

Thanks mitch!

So I can import my OE settings -- which would seem to imply that I can use my current email addresses.  But then you said OE would need to be set up "as if it were a new computer".  I guess I'm still not clear whether I can use my same current email addresses in the new acct?

Coincidentally, I just learned how to save/back up/archive my mail folders, export mail account settings and address book.  So if I can use all the same email data, I'm all set to import it into the new user account!

Whoops! :o Well, I just learned that switching accounts disconnects the internet   Although it may only affect dialup connections.  Unless I just got bumped offline at the exact moment I switched users.  Anyway, the icons that are different are MS Picture It! and MS Works Task Launcher.  Also, you know how some icons have the shortcut "bent arrow" and some don't?  In the new user account, different ones have the arrow or don't have it.  Like for example, CCleaner in the admin acct has no arrow, but in the new user acct, it has the bent arrow.  It's no big deal, really...well, I hope it's not !  It's just not what I would have expected.

That is a good idea, to have the extra admin acct.  I had actually thought of that, although for a different reason.  I was thinking if it was getting too frustrating to set up the new account, I would make the new acct the admin, and use my very familiar acct as the limited one.  I guess it would be easy enough to set up the "worst case" admin acct and not customize it.  In other words, just set up the acct and not change all the display settings, etc.  Just get OE and IE ready, and worry about the details if it's ever necessary to actually use it.

And thanks also for the instructions for saving passwords.  I have been slowly making my way through some of your pages, over the last few days.  There is a lot to learn!  But I am so grateful you have taken the time and energy to post all this info, for those of us who are too darn stubborn to just break down and take a class !

yes you can use ie and oe on both !
NOTE fast switching has troubles !!! so when you switch users some programs have trouble ( dialup and firewalls are two )

remember the shortuct arrow is usually a shortcut if no arrow it is the program ( no real difference to a operator )

ALL your account stuff should work! just need cookies and account settings to be the same !

earlier i said in user you can right click to run a program if you have trouble

it is right click and "run as" and you will see the admin and password spot for you to fill in

sorry but i was up late lastnight and need coffee this morning
