I downloaded a trial version of Diskeeper 10. Ran it once. Somehow, it has replaced the Disk Defragmenter that is packaged with my OS, Windows XP Home Edition!
How do I restore the original utility? Or, does the original utility reappear when the trial version is uninstalled?
(Curiously, the shortcut in the toolbar is for the Windows' Disk Defragmenter, but when you click on it, Diskeeper loads.)
Thanks.
From the Diskeeper 10 manual:
QuoteOn Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 machines, installing Diskeeper will not remove the built-in defragmenter, but Diskeeper will automatically become the default defragmenter. (The built-in defragmenter will be restored if you uninstall Diskeeper.)
Follow these steps to completely remove and uninstall Diskeeper from your computer:
1. From the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs. (On Windows 98/Me or Windows NT systems, click the Install/Uninstall tab.)
2. Highlight the Diskeeper entry.
3. Click Remove or Add/Remove (Windows 98/Me and Windows NT). This removes the Diskeeper program files from your computer. In most cases, the Diskeeper installation directory will not be removed.
On Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 systems, the Windows Disk Defragmenter is restored to the state it was in before Diskeeper was installed.

dan2,
If you decide that you do not want to use Diskeeper 10 after the 30 trial then remove it via your Control panel, use the "Add & remove programs" option select and remove Diskeeper 10 .
I then personally recommend you Reboot (ie: Re-start your PC)
Once you have removed Diskeeper 10 your origonal Disk Defragmenter (The one that was pacaged with your PC) will return.
you can then check to see if all of it was removed by doing a search for Diskeeper 10,
by clicing on the Startbutton then Search button select all file and fodlers.
Type in Diskeeper 10 and click the Search button you can remove any thing that is found.
I use Diskeeper as I like the "Set it & forget it" mode (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsmilies.sofrayt.com%2Ffsc%2Fthumbs-up.gif&hash=c1e3dd78f2962d425885915fa02daf0bba965636)
