Title: JPGs Masquerading as BMPs
Post by: babyoh on January 18, 2006, 08:54:58 AM
 :rose: hey everybody.
when i used int explorer, i'd sometimes right-click to save a jpg image -- and it'd be saved with the EXTENSION .bmp
:firefox: i'd be looking at a file named "image.jpg" and ie would say it's bitmap (only occasionally; not all the time)

this NEVER happened in firefox or opera. in fact, the EXACT same images ie saw as bmp, firefox would see as .jpg
no biggie, i'd just change the extension from .bmp to .jpg, and the image was viewable.
***Now: a friend tells me she's being sent images someone else has saved as JPG, but they're showing up to her (in email attachments) as BMP.
:tease: when i Googled, it said you can't view bmp's by changing the extension to jpg, that you need a converter.
anybody know anything about this? it's just confusing both of us.  :rose:

babyoh  :)

It´s IE trying to be clever. It recognizes the "jpg" to in fact being a "bmp"-image and therefore it displays it as bmp.

I recently made a writing on this subject here

:rose: thanks, die hard.
i didn't completely understand, tho... -- it's ie trying to be "clever"?
ie sees some jpg's as bitmap, and some as jpg.
i think i even had the experience where ie saw the exact SAME pics as jpg's later, or the next day.
** If I can change the ext from bmp to jpg, and the pic's are visible -- this means they were JPG to BEGIN WITH. and i won't suffer any loss of pic quality?
** I hardly use ie anymore -- WHAT A PAIN! but my friend's re-naming her bit-m's to jpg, so i got curious.
the person sending them to her SWEARS he saved them as jpg's...

Thanks for the Help!
