I have AVG as an antivirus program. It popped up a couple days ago indicating that it had found a Trojan Horse that it wanted to quarantine. I selected quarantine, and AVG appeared to complete the quarantine successfully. However, afterwards, neither my Firefox nor my Chrome browser was working. Apparently both had been changed so that they were directed to use a proxy server. I am not even really sure what that means. But regardless. I am concerned that there are lingering problems from the Trojan Horse that were not fixed by AVG.
Here are my logs. Thanks.

Hi, JPSheridan. Welcome to LandzDown Forum.
AVG partially removed a backdoor trojan. You need to be aware that a backdoor trojan can allow hackers to remotely control your computer,
steal critical system information and
Download and Execute filesAlthough we may be able to complete the removal of the trojan, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.
If you wish to continue with attempting cleanup, I suggest starting with the following:
Let's flush your DNS cache and restore the HOSTS file:
Please copy/paste the lines in bold below to Notepad:
@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Double-click flush.bat file to run it. Your computer will reboot.
Note: For Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click flush.bat and select "Run as Administrator".
Next, Download
TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop
- Open the file and close any other windows.
- It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
- Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
- Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
Since you already have MBAM installed, please do the following:
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
- Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
- Click Remove Selected.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Please post contents of that file in your next reply along with a fresh RSIT log (located at C:\Program Files\trend micro\John & Sue.exe).
** Note **
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
Although additional work is needed to remove/update vulnerable third-party software, how is your computer now?
Thank you so much for your quick reply. I did not check for replies soon enough because my computer seemed to be working fine. I am concerned about what you said about "backdoor Trojans," however.
I followed your instructions and ran a MalwareBytes scan; no infected files were found. The log is posted below. Should I change all my passwords for online banking, etc?
Thanks for your help.

Hi, JPSheridan.
Are Firefox and Chrome working correctly now? Let's take care of the proxy entry anyway.
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running (located at C:\Program Files\trend micro\John & Sue.exe). Place a check against the following, making sure you do not check anything else by mistake:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
You have some important updating to do as you have highly vulnerable software installed. For example, although you have the most recent Java update installed, you have old, vulnerable versions still on your computer.
Please uninstall the following:
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6After uninstalling, it is necessary to remove the left-overs. Please download
JavaRa (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=javara&filename=JavaRa.zip&use_mirror=osdn) and unzip it to your desktop.
- Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
- Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
- A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Next, you need to take care of the vulnerable Adobe Products. Both Adobe Air and Adobe Reader are out of date and vulnerable. Be sure to UNCHECK the optional McAfee Security Scan Plus.
Adobe Reader: http://get.adobe.com/reader/?promoid=BUIGO
Adobe Air: http://get.adobe.com/air/?promoid=BUIGQ
To check if your system is missing security updates or has any additional insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/)
or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ . The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:
- Detects insecure versions of applications installed
- Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
- Assists you in updating your system and applications
Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Corinne,
Thanks for your help. I do have one question. Whenever I run Hijack This, I receive a popup that tells me that my system is denying it write access to my Hosts file. Is this something I should be concerned about?
Sorry, JPSheridan. I haven't had anyone use HijackThis in such a long time, I forgot to tell you to right-click and run as Admin because you have Windows Vista.
