if the POWER service is DISABLED, there will be no sound. (i.e., enable the power service and start it.)
it seems that WINDOWS AUDIO, WINDOWS AUDIO ENDPOINT BUILDER must also be started.
(this has nothing to do with drivers.)
maybe this will help someone down the road.
i discovered this by accident - i was disabling what appeared to be unneeded services.
