Title: Ad-Aware and Firefox 1.5
Post by: G Dogg on January 31, 2006, 09:51:00 PM
Can someone tell me if there is a way to make Ad-Aware scan Firefox 1.5?  Or, is there a different program that will scan Firefox?

I currently have Ad-Aware SE Personal, SpyBot, as well as Spywareblaster and SpywareGuard.

Or, am I incorrect and Ad-Aware actually does scan Firefox and I just can't tell?

Thanks in advance!

G Dogg,
Ad-aware SE Build 106 (http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download) -  Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) etc scan your hard drive and give you the option to remove the nasties that they find.
if you are after a real time monitor of the above programs then you will need the paid for versions
(but note ewido does come with a 14 day full trial)
QuoteThis setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times

I'm pretty sure I already had the SE Build 106 running.

Perhaps I simply don't understand your reply, but are you saying that Ad-aware SE Build 106, as well as Ewido Security Suite, will scan Firefox in addition to the rest of my computer?

I also have McAfee Enterprise VirusScan 8.0.  Would Ewido conflict with this and be incompatible?

I did an online scan with Panda and it found spyware in Firefox.  So, I am really trying to find something that will scan Firefox as it seems Firefox is not being scanned right now.

Thanks again for your help!

G Dogg,
is it that you are looking for a program that will give you real time protection while you surff the internet while using FireFox ?
if so then you wil need the paid for version of a spyware scanner such as one of the ones above.
how ever the Spyware scanners Ad-aware SE Build 106 -  Ewido Security Suite etc (Free versions) wil Scan your pc's Hard Drive in full.
you a already have SpywareBlaster witch Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox.
can you clear out your cache folder ie: temporary internet folder There are some free programs that you can use that will do that for you if needed like ;)
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/)
(Note in CCleaner: go to >options > advanced > Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"). .

and then if needed you can always post us a log file if you need any help with what is found.
using
Ad-aware SE Build 106 (http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download) (Free/Personal)
[if not Uninstall your old Ad-aware first then install SE]
Then use the WebUpDate
to get the latest Definition file
(SE1R.89.24.01.2006)
To do this Open Ad-aware
Click the WebUpDate
button at the top right hand side of the Ad-aware screen (The world globe).
Click "Connect"
Ad-aware will then download the latest  Definition file for you.
To make sure it is updated , look at the main
Ad-aware screen, and look under "Initialization Status"
It should say the Latest Definition file.
then scan  doing a  "Full Scan" (http://www.lavasofthelp.com/howto/scan_se/) and then post your logfile here by using the Add-Reply Feature .

I suppose this is what happens when a computer expert, such as yourself, communicates with someone with limited knowledge of computers, such as me.

I apologize for not being more clear.

What I want is not real time protection, but a program that, when opened, and started, such as Ad-aware, will scan my PC in full (INCLUDING FIREFOX) to search for spyware/tracking cookies.  I realize that SpywareBlaster will block these, but after scanning my computer with Panda, I believe there are 12 malware issues (not sure of the correct terminology) that are within Firefox.  After scanning with Panda, I re-scanned (3 times now) with Ad-aware and Ad-aware found nothing.

After doing research on Ad-aware, I believe it does not completely scan Firefox or does not scan Firefox at all.  If I am incorrect, please let me know as I am basing this off the fact that while "watching" Ad-aware scans, it does not appear to scan Firefox (cache, cookies, etc.) and based off other articles or comments where people have stated that Ad-aware does not scan Firefox, but only Internet Explorer.

Again, I am not looking for real time protection, but rather a program that will (when I open and run it or start it) look in Firefox folders offline and tell me if I there is spyware or tracking cookies located there.

Have I been clear or did I jumble everything again?  Perhaps "scan" and "scan Firefox" are where the confusion lies.

Thanks again and please let me know if I am screwing up my request here.

Instructions for using CCleaner:As to running ewido and McAfee, I am not aware of any conflicts. I have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and have run ewido with no problems.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.  :rose: [/list]
