When I clik on this I get a pop-up message that says Not a valid Win 32 application. The RSIT.exe worked just fine. I'm dealing with Trojan Horse Downloader Generic 10.CEAB on my Toshiba Satellite A135 running Vista Premium.
What do I do next? TIA. Granniek

Please go

- Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
- Click Start
- When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install

Then I tried the ESET. Had problem with turning off AVG, finally got it off, then started ESET and it told me Windows Defender was running. I tried shutting it down, but don't know if I actually succeeded. Had to go to bed, but left the ESET running. Here is the log that I found this a.m.:

I haven't tried anything else with the 'puter this a.m., so don't know if the Trojan pop-up is still there. What next?

I have gone to other webpages that I thought safe and also printed the original letter where I first encountered the Trojan Horse pop-up. No such messages now. Is it gone??? Can I now turn the AVG & Windows Defender back on?
Hi, granniek.
Based on what you just wrote, it appears that the trojan was identified in an e-mail and detected by the AVG E-mail Scanner. Since the ESET scan did not detect anything, it appears to be gone.
If you are going to use AVG, you need to update it to the latest version. As you can see at http://www.landzdown.com/index.php/topic,239.msg125329.html#msg125329 , it was updated to version 9 last March.
In addition,
critical security updates have been released for Adobe Reader and Java. You need to update both since your computer is highly vulnerable to the exploits in the old versions.
Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ . Be sure to uncheck the optional McAfee scan.
Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6. Next, please download
JavaRa (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=javara&filename=JavaRa.zip&use_mirror=osdn) and unzip it to your desktop.
- Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
- Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
- A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Then download and install
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 23.
Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u23 (https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u23-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer)
Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update. They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.
Having a firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software are not enough. You also need to stay current with security updates. If you don't have your computer set to automatically install the Microsoft Security Updates, please check for updates now. For additional information, see my blog post Understanding Microsoft Updates (http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2007/12/understanding-microsoft-updates.html)
To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ . The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:
- Detects insecure versions of applications installed
- Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
- Assists you in updating your system and applications
Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html
Please confirm that you computer is back to "normal" and let me know if you have any questions.
OK, I updated AVG and now have a second icon on the taskbar that says 'AVG Running Scans'. I thought I'd downloaded the Adobe, but when I check of all the files listed the most recent says Adobe 8. I went back to the Adobe link and clicked once again on Download, but there've been none of the pop-up boxes and athe screen hasn't changed at all in the last 15 min.. How do I know it's actually downloading?
Hi, Granniek.
I won't use AVG so am not familiar with the icons. I am guessing that a second icon appears when the software is scanning your computer.
Did you go here for Adobe Reader? http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Not home most of the day, but I did get the Adobe and the Java. The AVG extra icon was because it was scanning. Scan came back OK. I'm beat....shutting 'myself' down. I'll try to get back to more of this tomorrow a.m. This happened at a bad time for my personal schedule. Not much spare time until Wednesday.
I so appreciate all your time, thank you very much.
Sheila :)
You are very welcome, Sheila.
