Title: Dragging computer
Post by: dian57 on April 23, 2011, 11:41:36 AM
I did a search on slow computers and the responses seem targeted at individual computer issues.

My computer is old but I had extra memory added awhile ago. Lately it just seems like there's something running in the background that slowing everything down.

This morning I uninstalled some programs that mysteriously appeared and things have improved slightly but not enough. There are only two adults who access this computer and we always check the same stuff; no crazy surfing or downloading. I'm not sure why things get so mucked up occasionally.

Is there a basic maintenance or program clearing that can be done to "spring-clean"?

you don't have to "crazy surfing" to accumulate evil things running on your computer.
it's a miracle if you don't.

what operating system do you use?
what service pack are you on (for the os)?

if you are not using at least xp with service pack 3 or newer,
there is precious little you can do to defend yourself when browsing.

I have Windows XP and update periodically. Not sure what service pack I have.

I emptied all the temp files, rebooted and the dragging continues. Now Outlook Express is freezing up and won't let me delete many emails in the inbox. I'm going to try the log posting and see if anyone can help.

Thank you.

It is importent that you update your OS to get SP3 and alll the security update as well after you have done all the updates.

We will do our best to assist you.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.
Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.
This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

Please advise the results of the on-line scan conducted.
Then, should you still need additional help, please post the requested logs from Log Posting Instructions (http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=423.0) as a reply.
