In the Photoshop Creative Suite series, the ability to view PSD thumbnails was removed. All you see in Windows Explorer is the PS icon.
Reason given by Adobe is that the .dl file used sometimes caused files to be deleted unexpectedly, so they removed it.
I found a fix for this, but I wanted to see if y'all thought this was safe to do?
I did try ThumbviewLite (http://download.cnet.com/ThumbView-Lite/3000-2072_4-10454169.html), which has a windows installer and uninstaller. but it only produced a corrupted thumbnail so I uninstalled it.
Any thoughts on this fix?

I have CS3, but there are notes in the comments that say this fix works for CS3
I know I can use Adobe Bridge to view the thumbnails, but it loads slow and is a bit of a pain. It's not worth loading if you don't have any of the other Adobe Suite components to network with it.
There seems to be many free PSD viewers/converters here is just one
http://psdviewer.org/
Thats an additional program though, as I understand the documentation.
I wish to be able to view PSD thumbnails in Windows Explorer, since that is how I search for and save files in Photoshop. So I'm trying to find a safe way to do that. If I can't, then I suppose I'll use the Bridge.

I would recommend further investigation before downloading a fix from someplace that redirects to another site, as the download link does from that blog post.
According to the post by Microsoft Support in this topic at Microsoft Answers, Why can't PSD thumbnails be displayed in Windows 7? - Microsoft Answers (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/why-cant-psd-thumbnails-be-displayed-in-windows-7/c898697e-3cca-41fc-b273-576042a904b1?page=1&tab=AllReplies#tabs), with the full version of Adobe Photoshop installed, you can do the following:
QuoteIn the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop with the inclusion of Adobe Bridge the thumbnail view of PSD files within the windows explorer is no more present, This can be really difficult if you intent to see preview of the file you need to open the Adobe Bridge inorder to view the preview, which consumes a lot of RAM.
Another way is to restore the the thumbnail view for the PSD files within explorer.
Here's how to restore thumbnails for PSD in explorer
The psd thumbnail view is not included by design in the lastest version of photoshop. To restore this feature follow these steps:
1. Download psicon.dll
2. Place the DLL in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell\
3. Thumbnail previews of PSD files are now back
Hope this helps.

Sujan – Microsoft Support
The psicon.dll can be downloaded from here: psicon.dll download (http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files.php/dllfiles/P/psicon.dll/download.html).
If you decide to try this, I strongly recommend creating a System Restore point first.
But that article is for Windows 7. Will it work for Windows XP?
And if I do the installation, will my files be at risk for being capriciously deleted?
I can't find anything about whether that was a rare or a wide-spread issue. I suppose I could do a full back up of my image files just to be safe.
