Title: My Scan Scanner held me captive
Post by: Bibbs on June 05, 2011, 05:06:44 PM
Hi, my name is Elizabeth. DonnaB is my sister and she wanted me to join here so I could have my computer looked at by a professional. I am a novice and she won't help me because she is still in training, though she said that if I bring my computer to her house she would stand over my shoulder and show me how to do this for myself, that way if I need help in the future I know what to do and where to go for help.

I have ran RSIT and Securitycheck, but the Rootrepeal program has been scanning now for over an hour and nothing is happening. Should I go ahead and stop the scan and post the logs for the scans that I have or just wait to see if that last scan completes. I am using one of my sisters computers to post this because she said not to interrupt the last scan till I found out for sure what to do. How long does that scan usually take?

Thank you, Elizabeth.

Hi, Elizabeth.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.  Donna warned told me you would be stopping by.  :)

We will do our best to assist you.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

Yes, go ahead and post the RSIT and Security Check logs.  Cancel RootRepeal.

I stopped the Rootrepael scan by clicking on file then exit. Donna said I probably shouldn't have done that. It did freeze up my computer and I had to shut it down by holding the power button down.

I'm posting the logs that I did get.

Hi, Elizabeth.

You seem to have quite a few toolbars installed which, although not malicious, have tracking capabilities.  Unless you use them, I suggest you uninstall the following:

Conduit Engine
Crawler Toolbar
Elf 1 Toolbar
SiteRanker

The version of Adobe Reader installed on your computer is out of date.  I note you also have Foxit Reader, which was the source of the Ask Toolbar, disguised as the Foxit Toolbar.  If you are going to keep the Adobe Reader installed, you need to update to the latest version, otherwise go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Adobe Reader 9.1.1.

Adobe Reader FTP Direct Download:  ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/

You have vulnerable versions of Java installed in your computer.  Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following:

Java(TM) 6 Update 16
Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Please download JavaRa (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=javara&filename=JavaRa.zip&use_mirror=osdn) and unzip it to your desktop.

I hesitate to have you update Java to the latest version because a critical security update is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, fixing 17 critical issues.  However, if you have games that you wish to play prior to the updated version is released, you can go ahead and download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 25.  You can Download the Windows x86 Offline version from: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u25 (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre-6u25-download-346243.html).

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.   .

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following, making sure you do not check anything else by mistake:

O18 - Protocol: tbr - {4D25FB7A-8902-4291-960E-9ADA051CFBBF} - C:\PROGRA~1\Crawler\Toolbar\ctbr.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please let me know if you have any questions with the instructions.

Hi, Elizabeth.

Since I posted this, Adobe has also released an unexpected security update to Adobe Flash Player.  See Another Adobe Flash Player Security Update (http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2011/06/another-adobe-flash-player-security.html) for additional information.

Hi Corrine,

Thank you for helping me out here. So my sister warned ... oh I mean told you that I'd be joining. She's such a good little sister.

Here is what I did. Donna told me to write it down so I don't forget because she had to show me a few things that were a bit different than your instructions above.

I uninstalled the Crawler Toolbar and SiteRanker with no problem. Conduit Engine and Elf1 Toolbar
would not uninstall through the Programs and Features window so she had me to go C:\Programs files and delete the folder. I was then able to uninstall through Programs and Features. Since I don't use FoxIt Toolbar, which she said was the ASK Toolbar in disguise, I went ahead and uninstalled that along with the MSN, Inbox, Yahoo, and Google Toolbars.

I went ahead and uninstalled Adobe Reader because she said FoxIt Reader took up less space. Not exactly what she said but I didn't understand what she was trying to tell me so she left it at that.

I downloaded JavaRa and got rid of the older versions of Java and installed Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 25.

She showed me how to scan with HiJack This to fix the 018 you wanted me to fix and she said it was ok to go ahead and fix the other 018 for the InBox thing that had the file missing since we uninstalled it. There were also some thing in the "R" section of the HiJackThis log that she said could be fixed also that had to do with the InBox Toolbar that showed links behind it.

She said that I should also tell you that I have not had anything pop up since the day I called her about that scanner called My Scan popping up on my computer and wouldn't let me do anything. If there's one thing I leaned from her it was never touch the screen of a pop up that looks suspicious.

I just saw the link for Adobe Flash Player in your last message, I'll click on that while I'm here.

Let me know if there is anything else that I should do. And thank you again for helping me here.

Elizabeth

Good job, Elizabeth!

I hate to bring bad news about yet another update, but the promised Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update has been released so it is now at Update 26. (See Critical Java Security Update (http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2011/06/critical-java-security-update.html))

I'm glad to hear that your computer is back to normal and you've learned a few things along the way -- don't worry if you forget, you can always ask us questions if Donna is busy. :)  It is an especially valuable learning not to touch the screen of a pop-up that looks suspicious.  End it with Task Manager (Control + Shift + Esc) or Alt + F4 will close the program currently active in Microsoft Windows.

To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following: My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Corrine. Now I see why Donna likes to do this. She always was the smart one of the family. I'll make sure that Java is updated to #26 and I'll have her explain what those programs do. She said they are really good to have if you don't know how to check and make sure everything is up to date.

Corrine, thank you so much for your time. At least I know I have someone to help me when needed. Donna did show me where to post if I just had a question about my computer. This is a nice thing that you guys do. And she even showed me how to subscibe to your blog so I could read and learn more if I wanted to.

You are most welcome, Elizabeth.  I am glad I was able to assist.
