Title: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 16, 2012, 03:24:42 AM
I'm hoping that you guys are willing to take on a reclamation project.  My friend sent her HP Compaq Mini 110 home with me to see if it could be helped. I told her I had every confidence in you guys and that you had helped me wonderfully with my computer problems for a long time.

Apparently this little netbook got a virus, and someone tried to fix it for her. That person deleted most everything on it in an attempt to clean it up.

Here's what I know about it:

It does open and Windows XP home does boot up.  I can navigate around via  Windows Explorer.  It has IE6 installed.  There are only 3 programs listed in the add/remove programs list:
Atherros Communications Inc. (R) AR81 Family Gigabit/Fast Ethernet Driver
Atheros Driver Installation Program
Broadcom 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter

In trying to connect to our home wireless signal, signing in with our password does not work, but it says it is connected via Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN, and it reports the device is working properly.  Some extra info: The connection needs WPA-Personal as a security type, Encryption type is TKIP and the network security key is 10 characters in length. We are on a Time Warner cable wireless network.

However, even with a signal rated as "good", there is no connection when I open the browser.

I did run the two scans suggested by downloading them to a thumb drive and running it from that on the netbook.  I don't know how to safely get that information to post here though.  Maybe thats where I need to start.  I ran the Micosoft Fixit program that disables autorun on my own machine, but I don't know if I need to somehow scan the thumbdrive before plugging it back into my computer again.

I will just retype the Security Check scan report for now.

Since you have autorun disabled on your computer, it will be fine to transfer the files.  That said, it sounds as though who ever "helped" made quite a mess of things "deleting most everything".  Any chance there is a system restore point or does the owner have the install disks?  A reinstall would likely be the best move, particularly with no service packs installed.  However, if you want to post the logs, I can take a look.

thanks Corrine!

I asked about disks, but none are available.  There are no restore points except for yesterday when I opened the machine for the first time.

I'm willing to dowload and install whatever is necessary to  get it current again. But is that something that can be obtained with the documentation on the netbook? There is a label on the back of the netbook that has  the UPC bar code from Microsoft and contains the product key.

It is titled:
Windows XP Home Edition ULCPC HP

And on the right side it says:
Proof of license
Certificate of Authenticity
Microsoft

There is also a sticker that identifies the netbook as:
product: Compaq Mini 110
This also has a bar code and two other numbers:
s/n:  and p/n:
Model# CQ Mini110C-1001NR
X12-51823

If you need the numbers, I can PM them to you, but I'm thinking thats not something that should be posted publicly.

A bit more info on the inability to connect to the network:

Error message:
Wireless Network Connection
Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network (name of our network here)

however, when I click the icon it gives the status as "connected".

Post by: Corrine on August 16, 2012, 05:58:35 PM
No, please don't post the other numbers.

For the certificate error, do the following:
Now, try to connect to your Wireless network.  (Note: you may need to restart the computer.)

It certainly appears strange that the log shows system as:  "Install Date: 3/20/2012 6:09:43 PM".   Are you certain that your friend didn't reinstall the OS in March?  Although svchost.exe is legitimate, it runs from System32, not as shown in the log.  Rather strange.

With the March date, if the Recovery Console has been installed, we can see if ComboFix can locate and restore any missing critical files.  If it hasn't been installed yet, I understand that the KB Article with the download link is currently being worked on.  I do not have an indication of when it will be completed.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from the following location:   Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum:  How to disable your security applications (http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f50/how-to-disable-your-security-applications-490111.html).

Now, please run ComboFix:

My friend said her son tried something on the netbook recently but gave up. That may have been the installation in March.  But I have no details other than that.

First, apologies that I attached the zip file instead of posting contents of the attach file. *lame smilie here*

Second, I was able to disable the authentication setting for the network, all though I found it in a different place than specified.  I then logged on with our network password.  It again says we have a connection, but IE won't connnect to the internet, and ComboFix also was unable to connect. The difference from before is that it is listing the local networks in the hover tip.

Wireless network connection (lists name of one of them)
Speed 36 mbps
Signal Strength: Low

Is alternately connecting to several different wireless networks along with our own.

[No recovery console installed.
Could not connect to the internet]

Avira is blocking the running of autorun.INF on the  USB drive that I'm using to transfer files.  I see ComboFix found an infection. That autorun file is now on the USB drive.  Should I do something about that?  I'm hoping I'm still safe.

It looks like my husband tried to connect us by installing a network bridge of some sort.  I reran the initial 2 scans. I'll attach them so that you can check them if you like.

autorun.INF is a text file that provides the launch instructions to the device and is supposed to be there.

What is attached in newscans.txt?

I'm not even sure if the recovery console would help but without it or installation media, there is no source to replace the infected BITS service or install the missing files.  You can see for yourself by looking at the logs that someone has done a massacre job to that machine.

Your friend can follow the links in How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs, and replace product manuals (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246/en-us) to find out if the vendor has replacement software available.

I'm sorry, there really isn't anything I can see to do to help any further.

I wondered about the autorun file on the USB stick because it wasn't there when I first started using the drive.  It just suddenly appeared.

:(  wow.   I know my friend wont' pursue it, so I'll give it a try.  Thanks for giving it a look. If I come up with anything from the links, I'll post in this topic again.   Is there any way I can install a recovery console without the internet connection?

The attached file has the rescan reports for DDS and Security Check.

What happens if you hard wire connect this machine to the router, rather than trying the wireless connection?
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 16, 2012, 08:29:10 PM
I'll have to see if my husband can do that.  I know nothing about routers and wires and such.  I'll post back after I check with him on it.
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: winchester73 on August 16, 2012, 09:42:11 PM
It's a simple matter of taking an ethernet cable, plugging one end into the computer, the other into the back of the router  :D

Given that this XP machine has IE 6 installed, I suspect it is EXTREMELY un-patched with Microsoft security updates.
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 16, 2012, 10:06:09 PM
Simple? you presume that I can both find the router and then  tell an ethernet cable from a  non-ethernet cable.   :look:

And I bet you are right.  Should we get this going again, I anticipate many hours of update downloading and installing windows updates.

I have a very strong signal now.  I suspect the connection issue has something to do with the set up of  it.  Not sure how to learn that...maybe I'll try to find a manual for it online and start there.

Personal opinion ... see if the hard wire connection works.  That is much faster than wireless anyhow, so you can update things much much quicker.  Then you can set to work troubleshooting the wireless connection.

I'd also run MalwareBytes AntiMalware and see what it finds ...

you were right, winchester  :cheers2:

I am connected via IE 6 but everytime I try to type an address in the bar, IE6 encounters an error and closes.  But it reports to the mother ship just fine now.

I reran ComboFix, but even though it can access the internet now, it was unable to download the Recovery Console. It did however, replace the infected .dll file that was found in the first running.

I ran a MalwareBytes quick scan and it showed nothing.  Should I try to update IE6 or try to update Windows?

haha! I am typing to you from the netbook!  If I stop the page from loading when I boot IE6, I can type a new address in the bar and then surf around just fine.  So I should be able to access any programs or updates from the netbook now (I think.)

ok. I'll do that. If the scan is clean, what do I do first then?

I did run a full MBAM scan also (took 2.5 min  wow...my computer takes 2 hours to do a full MBAM scan)  full scan also revealed nothing.

MBAM only took 2.5 minutes because of all the files that were deleted.  :D

ComboFix can't download the recovery console because Microsoft  hasn't put the page back up yet.  :(

Why don't you go to the website and have the computer scanned for missing drivers:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3979068&

There is also a link there to order recovery discs.

Eset online scanner found nothing.  So thats good.

GMDsetup.exe    to check for Compaq Mini drivers  would not run   Error: the application failed to initialize properly.

I followed the links to where it said you could install the activeX needed manually, but that failed as well.

However, this is the list of drivers for Windows XP. Should I install any of them?

I wouldn't install all at once.  Even though drivers can be rolled back, I suggest creating a restore point first anyway.  Start with the drivers, doing a couple at a time.  The missing Intel driver referenced by ComboFix may be included in the group.

In addition, under "Software - Solutions (‏9)", most of the HP software isn't needed.

Although it shouldn't hurt, and SP3 includes the previously-released XP fixes, it is recommended by Microsoft to at least install SP1 first.  SP2 isn't required but recommended before SP3.

With some luck, the network drivers will restore the wireless functionality.

As for the BIOS, you obviously only need the latest one (F.19)  :D

It has some guides for recovery without a recovery disc and to create recovery disks. I can access the screen for the first, but I don't know what to do with it.  Is this something to pursue?

Since ComboFix prompted for the installation of the Recovery Console, then I would not expect to find the HP recovery files on a separate partition.  However, if you like, you could run MiniToolBox checking the options shown below.

Please download MiniToolBox (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/dl/65/), save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Two things. I tried to install the audio driver. (Which already existed, but apparently is not working--the netbook has no sound.)  It said the software did not support it and aborted the install.

I tried to find updates to windows service packs next.  The netbook has Service pack 1. The documentation said not to install Service pack 1a if SP1 exists. The link to download SP2 gave a page not there error.
The link to download SP3 said not to download it for only a one-computer installation and redirected me back to the page with the download links for the service packs.

I will order the recovery disk if it is applicable.
(windows xp home sp3 + ms works recovery kit)

The one offered says that it is for Windows XP with SP3.  Should I order it?

Am I going to be able to update windows?

The Bios driver installed successfully.

I'm going off to do some errands. Back later this afternoon to try whatever you guys think is next.
I still cannot access the windows updates site from the programs menu.

To buy a CD of service Pack3, this is what I can order from Microsoft if needed:

E85-05370 Windows XP Professional SP3 English Patch CD Pro/Home

I expect you went here:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24.  It is a 316.4 MB download but will get SP3 installed.   Since you still cannot access Windows Update, you can ignore that it says for IT Professionals if you want to install it.  As shown in the attached image from when I clicked the download link, it does work.

An off-the-wall thought -- have you checked the recycle bin?  If the person deleted rather than uninstalled, you never know what it there.

If the Windows Update site doesn't work from the Control Panel, you could try the instructions or Fix it solution here:  You cannot install updates after a repair install of Windows XP or after Windows XP SP3 is installed immediately after a clean install of Windows XP SP2 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144).

Fantastic. I downloaded that version of service pack 3 and IT INSTALLLED successfully!

And..I can now access the windows update page.  It is happily installing an update program update currently....

And now, the first 114 critical updates...

When should I install the antivirus program? I'm planning to use Microsoft Security Essentials.  We are behind a router and the Windows Firewall is on, so I am assuming its ok to wait a bit on that.

Good job!

You might not want to do all the updates at once.  It usually goes better to do a bunch, restart, do some more, restart, etc.

oops.   All 114 have been downloaded, and it is halfway through the install. I guess I'll let it finish and see if it completes them. I saw Internet Explorer update to IE8 is included in this batch too.

Fingers crossed they all take.

I did say it was an off the wall suggestion but it was worth checking.  (Then again, I'm still laughing at myself for not seeing the obvious earlier with the Wi-Fi connection problem.  Thank goodness Winchester73 came along & suggested connecting directly to the router.)

Let us know when you've finished installing updates and what still needs to be fixed.  (I think we can call any restore of this netbook a miracle.  Your dedication seems to be paying off. :rose: )

About the antivirus question ... I would judge you to be safe as long as all you are doing is downloading MS updates, however once you decide to do anything else, I'd want MSE installed.

This only came to mind because my wireless connection has been flaky the last couple of days, so I hard-wired in order to avoid all the drops, etc.

Success!  All updates installed and I am now browsing on IE8.

And there is sound!  I just heard the tinny Windows music playing on signoff and signon.

Installed MSE successfully. It is now running a scan.

Obviously, it would be good to run a Secunia online inspector scan to check for any updates that you still need ...

I'm grateful you are posting things which are obvious to you.  Because they are not obvious to me--haha!

Off to do a Secunia scan.

I have to confess, after reading your first post, I thought this machine was relegated to being a doorstop ... good job so far ... perhaps it will be useable after all.

Indeed...I'm amazing myself at each turn of this.

Current status:

had to install Java to run the Secunia scan.  Installed most recent version Java. Version test successful.
Secunia showed multiple windows security updates needed.

Did another update via the windows update link in the programs list in the start menu.

Secunia shows all vulnerabilities patched now. :)

MSE scans are clean.  I installed Spyware Blaster as another line of defense.
I uninstalled ESET online scanner.  (Which I find odd that I had to download an "online" scanner.)

What else should I do before  adding some personal programs I know my friend uses?

A deeper Secunia scan is showing that IE6 still exists and is unpatched here:

C:\Windows\erdnt\cache\IEXPLORER.EXE\

Creation date of it is today.  Can I just delete the .exe file from that folder?
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work

Some things I am going to need help with:
In the add-on's manager (which asserts no add ons are enabled)  all the following are marked as enabled:

Shockwave flash object
MUWebControlClass
Java(tm) Plug-in SSV helper
Jave(tm) Plug-in 2 SSV helper

Not Available:
Diagnose Connection Problem
Windows Messenger

I'm assuming this means these were once installed with IE6, but  perhaps need to be reinstalled for the new IE8 update?    And if so, how do I get rid of the old installations and enable the new ones? It looks like I can enable and disable the addons individually.

One thing I would like to do is replace Messenger with a Skype installation, but if I need to leave Messenger there, I wonder if it should be updated to Windows live messenger....but I don't want to load down this little machine with too much "stuff" so I want your advice on that.

Regarding C:\Windows\erdnt\cache\IEXPLORER.EXE\ , give TFC a go:

Download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop
By add-ons, do you mean IE8 add-ons?  On IE8, I believe "Diagnose Connection Problem" is in the Tools Menu.

Regarding your start page, check SpywareBlaster > Misc. IE Settings.  Make sure the box is UNchecked by the "Disable the IE Home Page Settings . . ." option.

I'll leave your Skype question for someone who has used it.  :)
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work

TFC has been run.
The IE6 exe file is still in the erdnt/cache folder

I guess what is bothering me is that Shockwave Flash Object, for instance...shows in the IE addons manager list, but there is no listing of Shockwave Flash in the add/remove list in the control panel.

If you access the addons manager from the  Accessories/SystemTools/ INternet Explorer (no addons)..you gget a error bar at the top that says addons have been disabled.  If you access it from the Tools dropdown on the browser page, you don't get that message.  But in both cases the addons listed are listed as enabled.

Secunia deep scan is showing the same result:  the insecure IE6 program and is recommending all the following Windows updates:  (however when I search for updates on the updates site, none of these are returned)

Shockwave Player must have been one of the files the person deleted.  You could try installing it, disabling the add-on and then uninstalling it.  Most websites have replaced Shockwave with Flash or Silverlight.  I've never had it installed on this computer.  Some online games still use it though.

Secunia appears a bit messed up since all of the KB articles have multiple listings:

KB982381 -- listed 34 times -- MS10-035: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB982381

KB2544521 -- listed 12 times -- MS11-052: Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language could allow remote code execution: June 14, 2011, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2544521

KB2618444 -- listed 40 times -- MS11-099: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer: December 13, 2011, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2618444

KB2722913 -- listed 59 times -- MS12-052: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer: August 14, 2012, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2722913

Three of the updates are cumulative security updates for IE, so that may be Secunia's problem.  I suggest installing the updates in date order, one at a time.

thanks! I was so overwhelmed by the sheer number of updates listed that I didn't even notice there were duplicates.  installing the ones you listed is a LOT less daunting!

Also, I found that most of  the programs missing from the add/remove programs list are in the list for add/remove windows components.. (link on the add/remove page)  So I would like to remove MSN Explorer and Messenger.  maybe Outlook express--I'll have to check, but I don't think she uses that.  It seems the notebook would benefit from removing anything uneeded.

I'll get to work installing those updates now...
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 19, 2012, 01:53:44 AM
I'm unsuccessful in finding any of the updates listed above. :(  They either take me to a  page no longer exists, or they send me to the update site because a newer update has replaced that one.  If I put the update number in the search box it says "sorry, page requested cannot be found"

So now what to do.

My direct internet connection has stopped working.  the icon says it's unplugged, but its not.  The good news is that the wireless connection is working, even with a weak signal, but now things are a bit slower loading.    Strangely,  on  many reboots later of Windows,(and right before this happened) I just now went through a set up for IE8 where I declined their internet connection package (MSN explorer that included windows live and stuff)  could that have had anything to do with the end of the direct internet access connection?
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: Corrine on August 19, 2012, 02:27:15 AM
MSN Explorer is a web browser package, not an Internet Connection package.

As to the updates, yes, it is possible that the older ones have been replaced, but as you can see from the date, MS12-052: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer: August 14, 2012, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2722913 is from this past Tuesday.  It replaced KB2699988 and was included in August as a critical update for for IE8 on Windows XP SP3 and the other supported operating systems.

Check your installed updates to see if KB 2722913 has already been installed.

I did not find that number in the updates list.
But I can't seem to figure out how to access and install it.  Help?
I went to the linked page...it sends me to the windows update page to get it..but then, how do I get it?
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: Corrine on August 19, 2012, 09:52:02 PM
Have you tried checking for updates again?  It is possible it wasn't offered the first time because that included IE8.
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 19, 2012, 10:35:00 PM
Yes, I've checked for updates multiple times and it keeps telling me that no high-priority updates are available.
When I scan the custom updates, there are no updates offered for IE8 in the list.   I checked the update history again, but that KB number is not there.

A thought: Since I installed the new Internet8 Explorer updates after that critical KB cumulitive update was released, would all that have been included in the IE8 installation?  And that maybe the Secunia scan would not be able to discern that?

Could you also address my question about whether I can delete the vulnerable IE6.exe file Secunia identified in the cache folder?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The custom updates list for XP software is offering me several .NET framework updates, however, from 1.1 to 3.5, plus one for .NET Framework 4  Client Profile that has to be installed first.

There is no .NET framework installed at all yet that I can see, so not sure what to do with these.

:D

Good news.

I discovered that if I click the "show updates" box in the add/remove programs list, it shows all the Windows security updates that have been installed.  (Go ahead...y'all may laugh at me for not knowing this seemingly obvious trick.)
And my, what a long list I have...

ANYWAY..... KB2722913 IS INSTALLED (on 8/18). YAY!
And so are the other three KBs listed in Corinne's reply#52 post.

The list I had been checking was my update history on the Windows update site, and it is not listed there.

I have now installed Java.   The Java download from the link I got in the Landszdown update topic  installed a toolbar and Google chrome. I was not given a choice to opt out of Google Chrome. I opted out of the google toolbar, but it installed anyway.   I think that sucks.  I have uninstalled the tool bar.   I may leave the Chrome installation because it is loading MUCH faster than IE.  I'm going to create a restore point now before I do anything else.

---------------
Do I need both Windows Media Player 11   AND
Windows Media Format 11 Runtime?

I think the netbook  had just the Runtime version, but  Media Player 11 got added in an update..I think it might have been an optional update that I checked.
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: Corrine on August 20, 2012, 02:04:22 AM
Glad to hear the updates are installed!

From what I found when looking up Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, it is for people who want to use the latest Windows Media Player codecs whithout installing Windows Media Player 11.  (Hopefully, you have Download: Security Update for Windows Media Format 11 Series for Windows XP x64 Edition (KB941569) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=11136) :D ).

As to whether you need Windows Media Player, it depends on whether you plan on using it or not.

I believe you can delete C:\WINDOWS\erdnt\cache\IEXPLORE.EXE.  When ERDNT runs again, a new folder will be created.  Best thing, move it to the recycle bin and make sure everything is ok before emptying.
Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 20, 2012, 04:05:23 AM
Thanks.  I sent the IE6 .exe file to the recycle bin.  So far everything is working fine.

New Secunia deep scan now shows no problems:
"Congratulations, the scan that just completed of our PC did not detect any insecure programs!'

I uninstalled Chrome because I had an issue with the Flash installation. Rather than try to sort it out, I decided its probably better to only have one browser taking up resources.

I found some specs on system requirements for Skype and the little netbook JUST made the cut. :) So I did install it and it is working flawlessly.  (Except the video part, since there is no web cam on this machine. but you can use it for voice-only conversations.)

I don't think Media Player will be used.  It's likely she will only play files, and won't need burn and rip functionality (since there is no CD drive).  Uninstalling it seems to be a bit tricky according to this doc: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934372 , so I'll do that when I'm fresher.

The last issue, I think is the network connection.  Here's what I'm thinking.  It's probably set up to connect to my friends wireless set up.  So it seems there is no point in making it work with mine. Is that correct thinking?

Right now, it is hard wire connected at full strength.   It is also connected via the wireless network--although there is some settings reason it's not actually able to access web pages. But I wonder if that isn't something that would have to be worked out once the netbook is back home again.

Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work
Post by: pastywhitegurl on August 20, 2012, 04:21:26 AM
MSE automatic scan does not seem to be working.  I've set it a couple of times to test and it does not run at the selected times.

(Also, it's a pain to check, because the screen is so small that the note at the bottom of the home screen for MSE that gives the date of the last scan run cannot be viewed, and the window can't be resized to see it. I have to go digging in the folders for it.)

If I can't get it to scan automatically, I'm wondering if it might be better to replace MSE with Panda Cloud, which doensn't require user end updating. Even though you don't have the AV protection if using the computer offline, I don't think my friend even knows how to use a USB drive, so it would probably be a safe choice.

I also encountered this issue on another laptop I installed MSE on, even though I configured the laptop to wake the computer up for the scheduled scan.   Since I don't have a lot of experience yet with MSE, I was wondering if there was a simple way to to fix this. I did notice from some searches that this seems to be an issue with MSE that others have experienced.

hmm. can't find the file. It's supposed to be under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

but the thing is...there is no Application Data folder there.  uh-oh....

Please disregard previous post.

I found I can see MSE's  last scan details on the home page now by auto-hiding the windows task bar.  And MSE did, indeed perform the most recent scheduled scan I set up.

I am jubilant.

However, I still wonder about why I have no Application Data folder.

If memory serves, in XP the folder may also be here:

Title: Re: HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook doesn't work

The problem is there is no Application Data folder for anything.

This is what is under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
Desktop
Favorites
Shared Documents
Start Menu

I would have thought some program would have created it by now if it was deleted.  It should be there, right? I have been assuming that Netbook XP set up is the same as any other computer.

Application Data is a hidden folder.

1.  Open Folder Options in Control Panel. > Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.  Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
3.  On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

Well ok. That was the problem.  I forgot about hidden folders.  I'm glad it was something simple like my own ignorance!  haha! Thank you all for putting up with my questions.  (And I SUPER appreciate the exact instructions on where to find things.)

I feel like most things have been addressed now.  Is it time to remove Combo Fix and the other diagnostics that have been installed and call this finished?

One more question, driver updates....would that already be taken care of by all  the windows updates or something that would be prompted if needed?

Yes, it is a good time to uninstall ComboFix and you can remove the the other tools.  Please do the following to implement cleanup procedures and also to reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note: In the event you wish to contribute to the ongoing development of ComboFix, the developer is accepting donations via PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=combofix%40live%2ecom&item_name=ComboFix&no_shipping=0&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=USD&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&charset=UTF%2d8).

Drivers are often added as optional updates to Windows Updates.  However, it is best to go to the manufacturer site for driver updates.

I forgot to answer your question about .NET Framework.  It isn't required, however, some programs, particularly printers, depend on .NET Framework to work.  If a program isn't working, that could be why, although a new install that requires it should prompt for the installation.

thanks. Glad i don't have to deal with .NET updates or installations. I think all programs seem to be working.

I have uninstalled Combo Fix and malwarebytes.

For TFC, dds, Security Check and Mini Toolbox..I cannot find  instructions to remove or an uninstaller in add/remove programs.  So do I just send those to the recycle bin?

Sorry, I should have been more complete in my reply.  You've been through so much, I figured you'd know exactly what to do. :D

Yes, you can right-click those files and select delete, although running TFC from time-to-time is a good practice that you could show your friend.  Having Malwarebytes on hand for weekly scans wouldn't hurt either, unless your friend prefers a different anti-malware program.

I just want to be sure I don't mess anything up.  I asked because I got a prompt when I tried to send dds to the recyle bin asking if I REALLY wanted to do that because it was a read-only file. I had no clue as why that should make a difference, so thought it best to ask.

OK. I will leave those two programs.   I think TFC will scare her, because it makes the desk top disappear, but it seems simpler and safer than clearing temporary files other ways.  I'll try to explain it well.

I doubt she will run MB, but if there arises a problem MSE doesn't fix,  it will be there for someone else to run.

Just, please, ask beg her not to let whoever "fixed"  :winchesty73: the Netbook before not to ever touch it again.

I will definitely do that!

Wow.

I hope you realize that you may have created a monster.  I think I may not be afraid to tackle much of anything after this successful  experience.  :D

Regarding your question about the wireless connection setup ... most computers I've ever worked with are set up to connect automatically to whichever on the "approved" list is nearest.  So if you have it set to work with yours, it should also see your friend's once you return this netbook.  That said, since you are giving it back shortly, there probably isn't much reason to have it recognize your setup ... but I thought I'd mention this for a future event.

FWIW, I'd echo Corrine's comments and keep MBAM and TFC (although my preference is for CCleaner) on this netbook.  Your friend will want to learn how to practice "safe" computing, and those are two useful tools in the arsenal.

I like CCleaner better personally too..I run it at least once a day.  However CC has so many options on what and whatnot to remove that I think the simplicity of TFC is likely to be the better choice in this instance. Although I suppose I could set it up for her and just giver her instructions to run it occasionally.  That would give the option of always emptying the recycle bin or not.

So noted on the connection information.  I think my problem is that I don't understand what information it's asking for to set up the connection.

The very reason I like TFC is because it doesn't remove log files or mess with the registry.  Cookies aren't an issue and I'd rather manage them on my own.  Below is more information on TFC:

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

Hugs and a beer to both of you!

:D

I have been reading around about this netbook and I have discovered that it has a built in webcam.

I have no experience with webcams. How can I test to see if it is working?  I have tested the sound on a Skype account and it is working fine, but I didn't find a way to test the webcam.  I'll continue to try to research it, but so far I'm not finding the info I need. This is a feature I know will be used.  My friend has relatives on the other side of the globe that she Skypes with regularly.

I didn't find preferences under the Skype link, but when I go to  Profile > Set picture, it says No webcam found.
Same message on Tools> Options > video settings

just saw your link..I'll check it out.

Success!

From the tips on that linked page, I was able to check the Device Manager for the webcam.  There was an update wizard that installed the appropriate update and I have video now. :D

wow. I look bad on the web cam...haha!

should I check all those entries on the Device manager and update all drivers? Or do you only do that when something doesn't work?

(back a couple posts...Corrine...I will copy that info about TFC, that explains it really well)

Some people believe in updating drivers as soon as they are released whereas others are in the "don't fix it if it ain't broke" school.  The most important thing is for her to keep updated with security updates -- as you know, not only Microsoft but Adobe & Java too.

what school are you in? :)  My inclination is to not mess with anything that is working ok.

I am preparing a set of notes...one about what I did and how to access the things she uses, and the other on things she needs to do once a month to keep everything updated.  I will be sure to highlight the importance of the Java and Flash updates.

Just a final update for anyone following this thread.

The little netbook was shipped off today with all systems functioning, and a set of instructions to keep it humming and updated. My friend is ecstatic as the machine was previously in the "give to Good Will" box since everyone else had given up on it.

I never was able to do  the driver/software update check that HP offers (it would not install) and my questions asked at the help forum never got one response, so I didn't pursue updating any other drivers other than the video cam one and maybe the bios?  That might have been one of the list Corinne gave me that actually did install. But I went with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"  plan of action after that.

Its only remaining bit of weirdness is that it is getting Windows XP Pro updates even though it is the Home version (that's from using the developer download to update Windows) but hopefully that's not a problem, just something that will make anyone checking out the machine later go "hmmmm".

I did have to leave Java installed because the Secunia online update checker needs it to run, but I have set  Java to update automatically, along with MSE, Flash and Windows as long as she leaves the computer on through the night at least once in a while.. So it should be pretty much self sufficient.  Now, if my friend will just click the update prompts when they appear, things should be fine. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Many thanks Corinne and Winchester....you guys are the best.

I have to admit to being a bit skeptical at the start that you'd have anything other than a doorstop at the end ...  :D
