Title: From One Tragedy to Another
Post by: Corrine on December 25, 2012, 09:30:34 PM
This local tragedy has put a severe damper in my holiday spirit.  We live in a neighboring town.  Both of our children grew up with children of volunteer firefighters, with many of them now volunteers or full-time firefighters.  Our son was in the Explorer program, and our daughter knew the volunteer firefighter/police officer who was slain.

Of course it goes without saying that all in Australia are feeling for all concerned in the ghastly shootings in the US of late.  We here in OZ had one group massacre in Tasmania in the mid 1990's.  The result was throughout our country John Howard (Prime Minister at the time) issued a buy back system for all unregistered guns.  This was successful and to date there has been no more mass killings.

Today I was pleased to see this starting to happen in the US as a start to maybe controlling your issue. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/12/gun-buyback-gift-cards.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+lanowblog+(L.A.+Now)

Sincerely and thinking of you all,

kind regards,

Thanks.  What has been so incredibly amazing is the outpouring of support in the community for not only the families of the four firefighters and the families whose homes were destroyed but also the thousands of firefighters from all over the U.S. and Canada who are traveling here to pay their respects.   Members of the community have pre-paid hotel rooms and meals for visiting firefighters, local businesses are contributing food, sponsoring fund-raising events and also making corporate donations for the four families.
