Firefox is my default browser, and I have not used IE9 for well over a year.
Last night, as I was getting bored (.. :hysterical:..), I thought I would have a go with IE9 and see if I can configure it in a similar way to my F/F.
I have, however, hit a problem with it.
It opens absolutely fine....it displays today's Halloween screen perfectly well (Bing is the search engine), but I can not carry out ANY searches... :(
Any search I try and carry out, I get a small notification on the bottom left hand corner of the screen that: "Waiting for response from Bing.com". After that, nothing more happens.
I suspected some possible conflict with third party software and, as far as I can remember, the only addition to my normal "defence" has been CryptoPrevent.
I then stopped CryptoPrevent, by using its "Undo" button, to cancel the additional policies it introduces.
CryptoPrevent, does not seem to be the problem, as IE9 still does not search...
I have checked the "Internet Options" of IE9 and it verifies that it is connected to the internet.
I keep scratching my head and I can not come up with any reasonable idea as to what might cause this problem... :wub:
My computer is fully updated. I seem to vaguely remember that in the fairly recent past there was some Microsoft update that was causing a problem....I can't, however, remember if it had anything to do with Internet Explorer.
I would be grateful for any ideas/suggestions.

Is it only searching Bing where you get the "waiting for response" with IE9 or other websites too?
Searching for any website gives me the same problem.
Hmmm, I don't think I phrased that correctly. The way I'm reading what you wrote, it sounds like a problem with Bing on IE9 -- or am I completely misinterpreting the problem?
I get the same problem if I use google as the search engine.
Are you searching directly from the address bar or via the Bing or google sites?
Generally, the first step for troubleshooting IE is to run it with no add-ons via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). If running with no add-ons solves the problem, then it will be necessary to locate the add-on or Active X that is causing the problem. In the event running with no add-ons doesn't solve the problem, the second step is to reset IE. You can do it manually or use the Microsoft Fix it. See How to reset Internet Explorer settings (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737#appliesto).

I started following your instructions Corrine, but when I saw how many add-ons there are, I was wondering how I was going to find out which one might be the offending one (if indeed there was one), without having to spend a week on the job... :wub:
I decided to assume that all the Microsoft ones were legitimate.
From the four non-Microsoft add-ons left, there was one I did not like the look of...
It was the first item under "Run without Permission":
"GEPluginCoClass Object" , which was enabled. I disabled it and then closed the add-ons screen.
I opened the add-ons screen once more and this entry had disappeared. It was not even showing as "disabled". It was just not there!!
From that point, I restarted the computer, run IE9 with three different search engines, and it works perfectly well.... :exorcize:
I don't know what this add-on entry was, or if I should really have removed it. However, disabling/removing it, seems to have done the trick!
I have searched the internet for this add-on and I am not sure I like what I read. Is it an "unwanted" add-on? I just don't know.
I have scanned the computer with both MBAM and NOD32 A/V and both do not find any problem.... :dance:
Good work, Basil! "GEPluginCoClass Object" appears to be the Google Earth Plugin.

Did you install Google Chrome on this box? It seems to drop both GEPluginCoClass Object and Google Update Plugin ... there are reports that both can cause issues with IE 9.
I think I have tried it in the distant past, winchester73. A few years back.
