Title: Facebook blues!
Post by: Basil on February 13, 2014, 06:53:58 PM
That's it...I've had enough with it... :smash:
I have just deleted my facebook account. Apart from a few items of interest (thank you Corrine), the rest of it is primarily an outlet for frustrated people and attention seekers. Prior to deleting the account, I also deleted my complete activity log.... A long manual process... :thud:

I am just keeping my Twitter account.

Awe, I'll miss you there. :(  Perhaps what you needed to do was unfriend the attention seekers.

For the most part, I don't have the same experience you've described.  Aside from family and "real life friends", those on my friends list include other forum friends and MVPs.  In addition to the WinPatrol group, I also belong to a couple of other private groups that share good information and also have good discussions.

Basil,
you know me not think that much of twitter either  :muahaha: Seems as though they both need policing more.
or at least beef up there security a lot more.

Twitter tends to be faster than RSS feeds to get information.  Again, care is needed in who you follow.

You are absolutely right there. That was the mistake I made with Twitter first time around.. :(
This time, however, I am very selective in who I follow.

As far as Facebook is concerned, I only had 38 friends.
Apart from me, nobody else in my family has an account. The vast majority of "friends" are my daughter in law's family, my wife's friends/colleagues, my son's friends and a couple of real life friends.
What angered me, and got me to delete the account was a posting from one of my wife's work colleagues. She posted a close up photo of her two year old daughter's bum, who is in nappies (diapers in US?), with public viewing permission,  asking people to "like" if they found the photo.....sexy... :uhm:...You would be amazed if you saw the number of "likes". If that is not sick, I don't know what is.!!

What really interests me are security sites like ESET, MBAM, WinPatrol you own blog and a few others, plus postings primarily from your good self and Bill. If I was to unfriend all whose postings I find "irrelevant", that would mean maintaining an account with only three or four friends....hardly worth the effort...
What I find amazing is the number of "friends" some of my friends have. One, in particular, has 3000 friends...yes, this is not a mistake....it is a three (3) with three zeros (0) after it...... :look:

Having said all that, Facebook does not formally delete an account for 14 days after a request for deletion. As you are probably aware, if someone logs back in during this 14 day period, the request for account deletion is cancelled.

However.....Is it worth it?....

After a couple of days of abstinence.. :D..I started suffering from withdrawal symptoms.
I have really missed my "Groups" and "Interests".
As a result.....
I have just cancelled the deletion of my account and I am back on line. However, I have "Unfollowed" many FB friends and am not going to be wound up by them any more. I have only kept the sensible ones.....

Welcome back!  Not so certain that everyone would consider me sensible but happy to see I'm still on the list.

I now only have 25 people on the friends list, ALL of them "hand picked"..... :tease:

What matters is quality and not quantity..... :hysterical:

Incidentally, I have discovered that the "Unfollow" function of FB does not work. It temporarily removes a post, but then it comes back again, on page reload.. :look:
This is relatively recent and I don't know if it is a FB bug or a F.B. Purity problem (I cant see any Purity setting causing this).
As a result, I actually used the "Unfriend" function. A little more drastic but necessary, under the circumstances... :smash:

I've never gotten into social media.  What times a search landed me on a Twitter or Tumblr page did not make me want to rush out and create an account.  Facebook on a search shows a blank page so no idea what the benefits are if any.
(Don't any family/friends who aren't within physical contact distance anyway.)

Am now seeing more and more businesses and groups which only do Facebook or Twitter so that makes me wonder about it.
Then again every time I see Facebook mentioned in the news its a bad thing (of course that is likely because it is the News.   )

So taking away the family/close friends gathering together aspects of it, is it worth getting into?

I would love to Gordon, but I have now taken the final and irrevocable decision to quit it...... :hallo:
I have better things to do than carry out an in depth investigation and discussion (over a three week period) of colonoscopy !!!.. :thud:...Honestly...NO kidding!!

On the 14th of the month, my account will be deleted. I was only keeping it open for the "Groups" and "Interests". I have now made sure that I can access them without F/B.

I am keeping my Twitter account open (Basil2744). It is very easy to lose control of the twitter as well ! But I have been OK, so far!!
