Title: WP Upgrade Procedure
Post by: TomAZ on July 25, 2014, 11:50:50 PM
So what's the best (and easiest) way to upgrade from WP Plus 31 to 32.5 and save all your settings and configurations?

Hi, TomAZ.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Personally, I had no problem upgrading from v31 to v32, followed by v32.5.  I downloaded the new release, right-clicked Scotty in the system tray and selected Exit.  Following that, I installed the update.

Version 32 of WinPatrol creates a new directory, leaving the old BillP Studios folder behind.  This was done to ensure everything was properly included in the new folder.  One of the main concerns was the history.txt file (although it isn't critical to the operation of WinPatrol, but would be helpful for restoring a file removed from start up).  However, you can certainly check the new WinPatrol folder in the Ruiware directory to confirm it is fully populated.

New Location:

C:\Program Files\Ruiware\WinPatrol (on 32-bit systems) or
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ruiware\WinPatrol (on 64-bit systems)

Old Location:
C:\Program Files\BillP Studios\WinPatrol (on 32-bit systems) or
C:\Program Files (x86)\BillP Studios\WinPatrol (on 64-bit systems)

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks Corrine.  So, are you saying that it's necessary to install v32 before v32.5?

No, sorry for the confusion.  It isn't necessary to install v32 before v32.5.  That was just the path I followed.  Version 32.5 had some changes to stabilize the Delayed Start list, described by Bret and Bill in the quotes in my blog post, WinPatrol v32 Update (http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2014/07/winpatrol-v32-update.html).

I just installed 32.5 over the top of 31 on my backup box without any problems  :D

In the WinPatrol folder of v32.5, what's the difference between the files, WinPatrol.exe and WinPatrolEX.exe?

WinPatrol.exe is the component that monitors for changes on your system, and displays the green Scotty icon in the system tray.  It launches with your computer and remains running in the background at all times.

When you launch the WP interface manually by double-clicking the Scotty icon in the system tray (or right-clicking one of the options, or via Start>Programs for those with a Start button), WinPatrolEx.exe (WinPatrol Explorer) launches the main tabbed interface that allows you access to all that WP offers.  That results in the blue Scotty icon at the bottom of your display screen in the taskbar.  When you "close" this window, WinPatrolEx is removed from memory.

For those with a Start Menu, there are the following icons:  WinPatrol (Green), WinPatrol Explorer (Blue), Uninstall (Purple) and Help (Yellow).

Not sure I totally follow this, but for me, when WP launches at Windows startup (XP), the icon is green.  However, after a few minutes, it turns blue - even without accessing the GUI.

Hi, TomAZ.

I bet you were using the original Scotty icon for WinPatrol.exe in the system tray, right?  You can leave it as it is if you like the blue or change it back to the original Scotty icon, the "Blue Orb" or even something else.  I consolidated the history as well as providing two different methods of changing the icon in How to Change Scotty's System Tray Icon (http://www.landzdown.com/how-to%27s-tips-information/how-to-change-scotty%27s-system-tray-icon/).

Yes I was.  Made the registry changes and good to go now.  Thanks.
